Bombers Take Two in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Ithaca College softball team blanked Wheaton College in six innings before overcoming a two-run deficit late in the game against Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts as the Bombers won both of their games on Wednesday at Legends Way Softball Complex in Clermont, Fla.  With the decisions, Ithaca moves to 5-3 on the season.

Ithaca 8, Wheaton (Mass.) 0 – 6th Inning

The Bombers belted 10 hits including four doubles en route to an eight-run win over the nationally-ranked Lyons in the sixth inning of play.

Ithaca got on the board first after scoring in the second frame on an RBI-single to right field by Emily Bloom that plated Alex Wright who had walked earlier in the inning.
After holding No. 16 Wheaton off the board in the top of the third despite two hits, the Bombers would blow things open in the home half of the inning after smacking five hits.

Allie Colleran led off with a single and would come around to score after Vanessa Brown lifted an RBI-double over the centerfielder's head.  The next batter, Hannah Peters, would move her to third base after a double to the fence of her own to put runners at second and third with one out.  Casey Gavin would deliver the big blow for Ithaca with a two-run single to put the Bombers up 5-0 before the Lyons could escape the inning.

Ithaca would seal the win in the sixth inning with three more runs after loading the bases with three straight walks before Nikkey Skuraton drove home two runs with a shot to left center field to make it 7-0, Ithaca.  Ithaca would load the bases again when Brown was hit by a pitch and Hannah Peters would draw a walk to score Gabby Litz with the winning run.

Haley Congdon earned her first win of the season after tossing five innings of scoreless ball.  She gave up three hits and struck out three before being relieved by Laura Quicker in the sixth.

Three players notched two hits in the win.  Colleran went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored.  Skuraton was also perfect at the dish collecting two hits in two at-bats to go along with two RBI and a walk.  Brown was 2-for-3 overall with run scored and one run batted in to her credit.

Ithaca 12, MCLA 6 – 8 Innings

The Bombers would take an early 4-0 lead through six innings of play, only to see the Trailblazers put together a six-run sixth inning on six hits to take a two-run advantage into the final frame.  Down 6-4, the Bombers responded with a pair of runs of their own after Skuraton led off with a triple and later scored on a single by Alex Wright.  Ithaca would tie the contest when Gavin singled to short to score Wright and make it 6-6.

The Bombers would get out of the seventh inning without allowing a run before erupting for six runs on four hits in the top of the eighth with Hannah Anderson, Erin McQuillan and Brown each collecting RBIs in the process.

In the bottom of the inning, Congdon would close the door on any comeback as the Bombers earned the come-from-behind win, 12-6.

Congdon was credited with her second win of the day after throwing two innings of one-hit ball in relief.  Quicker started in the circle and went five innings before being relieved by Allison Macari in the sixth.

The Bombers will continue with their play in Clermont, Fla. on Thursday with a pair of games.  Ithaca will duel SUNY Geneseo at 9 a.m. before battling Anderson at 11 a.m.
