Katherine Pitman (track and field) and sophomore
Nick Velez (wrestling) have been selected as Ithaca College's Athletes of the Week on Monday for their outstanding performances in postseason competition this past weekend. Both student-athletes helped their respective teams finish in first-place at the NYSCTC Indoor Track and Field Championships and at the Northeast Regionals.
Pitman was named Field Athlete of the Meet at the state championships, hosted at the Athletics and Events Center. She took first place in the pole vault and set the team, facility, conference and meet record in the pole vault, clearing 4.07 meters which is the second-best in Division III this season. Pitman won the event by .47 meters, which contributed to Ithaca winning its 15th and second-straight state title with an overall score of 216.5 points.
Velez, the top seeded 165-pounder at the Northeast Regionals, made quick work of his competition at Springfield College this past weekend. In six matches, he had two major-decisions, a 42-second pin, and two decision victories to take first place and helped the Bombers finish in first place for the second straight season at the Northeast Regional Championships.
Pitman will join the track team at the ECAC Championships next weekend in Staten Island while Velez and five fellow Bomber wrestlers will head to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in search of the program's fourth National Championship the weekend of March 11-12.
