ITHACA, N.Y. – Sam Bevan recorded his fourth double-double of the season on Friday as the Ithaca College men's basketball team wrapped up its regular season with a 101-87 loss to Hartwick College in Ben Light Gymnasium. With the loss, Ithaca concludes the 2015-16 regular season with a 13-12 overall mark and a 7-9 record in conference play. Hartwick improves to 17-8 overall and 12-4 in the Empire 8 standings with the win.Â
Prior to the game, Ithaca honored Bevan, the team's lone senior, during its Senior Day ceremony. The Strattford, Pa. native concludes his season as the Empire 8's leader is assists per game (6.4) and ranks fifth all-time in program history with 378 career helpers.
Both teams looked to push the pace in the early goings of the first half. Neither wasted anytime getting set in the offensive zone as the first half featured 17 made 3-point field goals on 40 combined attempts. The Bombers knocked down nine while the Hawks poured in eight from behind the arc.
Trailing by three with nearly six minutes gone by, the Bombers would score five straight points including a triple from
Marc Chasin to give the home team a 14-12 edge, but the Hawks drained a 3-pointer on their next possession to take a slim one-point lead. The 3-point bevy continued as both teams connected from distance on consecutive possessions before a pair of free throws by Chasin staked Ithaca to a 19-18 lead with 12:05 left to play in the opening frame.
From there, Hartwick would score five quick points, but the Bombers responded with a quick 8-0 run highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers by
Matt Flood to open up a four point lead of their own, 27-23.
Ithaca extended its margin to seven points when Bevan dished out one of his six first half assists to Chasin who sank another deep trey to make it 32-25. The Hawks would cut the deficit to two points with time winding down, but the Bombers closed out the half on a 10-3 run that included two more 3-pointers from
Carlin Champion to hold a nine point edge at intermission, 47-38.
Hartwick came out of the locker room energized as the Hawks began the second half of play with eight unanswered points as part of a 21-6 run that saw Ithaca go from a nine point lead to a point hole, 59-53.
Flood would bring Ithaca to within two points with a pair of makes from the charity stripe, but the hawks would push their lead up to 12 after stringing together eight unanswered points as part of an 11-3 run to take a 67-55 lead with 11:14 left to play.
The Bombers would chip away, however, cutting the margin to seven points after converting three consecutive lay-ups but that was close as the home team would get over the final nine minutes as the Hawks pushed their lead back to double-figures with a 7-0 spurt en route to the 101-87 win.
Chasin led Ithaca with 26 points on 10-of-17 shooting. The sophomore guard also added six rebounds and one steal. Bevan finished with 12 points, 11 assists and seven boards while
Peter Ezema and Flood each contributed 15 points.Â
Carroll Rich had 10 points and four rebounds at the guard position.Â
The Bombers shot well from the free throw line, going 15-for-17 (.882) overall. Ithaca also distributed the ball well, accounting for 20 assists on 39 made field goals.Â
