ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's basketball team posted their largest victory of the 2016-17 season on Tuesday evening in Ben Light Gymnasium with an 88-46 triumph over Wells College. With the win, Ithaca is now 6-1 on the season, while Wells drops to 3-3.
Ithaca used an early 11-4 run over the opening 3:24 of the game on three 3-pointers. Wells fought back to 17-14 by the 2:35 mark, but the Bombers closed out the quarter with seven of the final eight points to establish a 24-15 cushion.
Senior
Erin Ferguson had seven points in the first period, while freshman
Cassidy O'Malley accounted for five points.
In the second quarter, Ithaca netted 14 straight points to extend its run to 21-1 before the Express could find the bottom of the net, which took place with 6:35 on the clock. By that time, the Bombers led, 38-15, and would head into halftime with a 22-point advantage at 44-22.
Ferguson and O'Malley both reached double digits by intermission with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Junior
Jordan Beers chipped in six points, while senior
Ali Ricchiuti added five. Sophomores
Sara Jackson and
Meghan Pickell both tallied four points in the first half.
Ithaca outscored Wells by 20 in the second half to account for the 42-point win. Senior
Shayna Gaskins scored all eight of her points in the third quarter, which happened to be the final eight points scored by the Bombers. In the fourth, freshman
Sarah Cargill hit back-to-back three to cap off the 88-point night.
Ferguson finished the game with a double-double – 17 points (8-for-10) and 10 rebounds – to go along with four steals and two assists. O'Malley poured in 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting, while Beers added 11 points and four assists.
Jackson contributed eight points, while junior
Julie Yacovoni tallied six points with three rebounds, three assists and three steals. Mazzella pulled down five boards, as did Gaskins. Ricchitui dished out four assists, and junior
Erin Woop grabbed six rebounds with three assists.
Ithaca shot 48.6-percent (36-for-74) in the contest and assisted on 27 baskets. The Bombers also forced 23 turnovers which led to 21 points. The Bombers' bench registered 49 points in the win.
Up next for Ithaca is No. 9 University of Rochester at 2 p.m. on December 10 in Rochester. It will be the Bombers' last game of 2016.
