Brockport Tops Ithaca Football in 42-28 Shootout

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The Ithaca College football team had its two-game winning streak at The College of Brockport on Saturday in a shootout that resulted in a 42-28 outcome at Bob Boozer Field. Ithaca is now 3-3 on the season and 2-2 in the Empire 8 Conference, while Brockport improves to 4-2 (3-1) overall.

Despite the loss, Ithaca held one of the nation's top running backs, Dan Andrews, to nearly half of his season average. Andrews entered the game averaging 141.8 yards a game, but the Bombers limited him to 77 yards on 22 carries.

Senior Wolfgang Shafer had one of the best games of his career, as he tossed four touchdowns of 12-of-18 passing for 253 yards. Junior JR Zazzara also put in a career with 170 yards on six receptions and two touchdowns.

Ithaca received the opening kickoff and accumulated 35 before the drive stalled out at Brockport's 40-yard line. The big play of the drive came on a 24-yard pass from Shafer to Zazzara.

Brockport took over at its own 12-yard line after the Ithaca punt. Sophomore Aaron Francis would intercept a pass five plays later to set up the Bombers with terrific field position at the Brockport 36. Shafer would eventually find junior Jared Bauer for a 24-yard touchdown to give Ithaca a 7-0 lead with 6:34 left in the quarter.

The Golden Eagles answered with a 29-yard field goal four minutes later to cut the score to 7-3, but Ithaca wasted no time getting back on the board with a 48-yard touchdown pass from Shafer to Zazzara on the Bombers' first play from scrimmage after a 39-yard kick return by junior Jordan Schemm.

The first quarter ended with a 14-3 score in favor of Ithaca, as the Bombers outgained Brockport, 122-46, over the opening 15 minutes. Shafer accounted for 119 yards through the air in the quarter.

Brockport took over the game in the second quarter with 17 unanswered points. The Golden Eagles would rack up 157 yards in the quarter, while Ithaca lost 10 yards. The Bombers were unable to pick up a first down in the frame.

With 11:44 remaining in the second quarter, Brockport recorded its first touchdown of the game on a 5-yard run by Joe Germinerio. Just under five minutes later, Andrews punched one in from a yard out to give the Golden Eagles their first lead of the contest.

On the ensuing kickoff, Schemm set the Bombers up with in plus-territory with a 40-yard return which brought the ball up to the Brockport 48. A pair of sack and a delay of game penalty pushed the Bombers back to their 33-yard line and were forced to punt.

Brockport would grind out the rest of the clock in the half and tacked on a 31-yard field goal as time expired, and went into the break with a 20-14 lead.

Ithaca would regain the lead on its first possession of the second half on another Shafer-to-Zazzara connection - this time 43-yards with 8:56 to go in the third. The Bombers capitalized on an illegal-hands-to-the-face penalty after a sack of Shafer set up a first down at the Brockport 43-yard line.

Just two minutes later, Brockport went back in front on a 16-yard run by Andrews, his second of the day, to give the Golden Eagles a 27-21 advantage.

As the third quarter came to a close, Shafer found Zazzara wide open down the middle of the field for a 46-yard completion to set up Ithaca at the Brockport 13-yard line. Three plays later, Shafer connected with freshman Will Gladney for a 17-yard touchdown to put Ithaca back in the lead, 28-27, with just under 14 minutes left to play.

The game continued to change leads less than two minutes later as the Golden Eagles threw a 79-yard touchdown pass from Germinerio to Nate Wilkinson. A two-point conversion would give Brockport a 35-28 advantage with 12:14 on the clock.

Brockport put the game out of reach with a touchdown with 4:20 left in the contest after Ithaca turned the ball over on downs deep in its own territory.

Ithaca totaled 242 yards in the game, but was stuffed to a season-low -11 yards rushing, mostly in part to seven sacks by the Brockport defense. The Golden Eagles finished the game with 413 yards in a balanced attack of 213 through the air and 200 on the ground.

Next up for the Bombers is a 1 p.m. showdown with Morrisville State at Butterfield Stadium on Oct. 22.
