Chasin's Double Overtime Heroics Lift Ithaca to Win at Hartwick

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Marc Chasin poured in the game-winning lay-up as time expired as the Ithaca College men's basketball team snapped a three-game losing streak by handing Hartwick just its second loss in conference play after grinding out a 117-115 double overtime win in Lambros Arena.  The win gives Ithaca a 10-7 overall mark and a 4-4 record in Empire 8 play while the Hawks slide to 11-6 overall and 6-2 in the conference standings.

Chasin, who scored 10 points in the overtime periods, finished with a team-high 29 points along with six rebounds and six assists.  Joey Flanagan added 26 points in the win while Peter Ezema earned his eighth double-double of the year after scoring 17 points and pulling down a career-high 19 boards.  Senior Sam Bevan also tallied a double-double, his second of the season, after contributing 20 points and a game-high 12 assists.  Bevan got the job done on the defensive end of the court as well, coming up with five steal of Ithaca's nine steals.

The Bombers, who shot .541 from the floor, made 46 field goals in all while attempting a season-high 85 shots.  The team dished out 33 assists, which was the highest total in a game this season.

After falling behind by eight points at halftime, 48-40, Ithaca struggled to find its rhythm coming out of intermission.  The Bombers trailed by 11 just 1:30 into the second frame after back-to-back baskets by the Hawks made it 54-43 with 18:29 left in regulation.

Ithaca would hang around, however, eventually cutting the Hawks' lead to one point, 73-72, after Ezema connected on a lay-up inside the paint.  After forcing a tough shot and corralling the rebound, the Bombers would take their first lead of the half after Bevan found Matt Flood in the corner for a deep three to give the visitors a 75-73 advantage with 6:19 still left to play.

After swapping the lead back-and-forth, Ithaca would regain control, eventually building a three-point lead before Hartwick would tie the game at 84-84 with under two minutes to go.  Chasin would break the tie on a feed from Bevan and would give Ithaca another three-point lead after another quick lay-up made it 89-86.  With time working against it, Hartwick inbounded the ball and pushed the pace before heaving a final second 3-pointer that found its mark to send the game into overtime.

The Hawks carried the momentum over into the first overtime period, scoring four unanswered points to take a 93-89 lead before the Bombers could get on the board with an open jumper by Chasin to make it a one possession contest.

Hartwick would go up by three late in the frame after a pair of free throws, but as had happened at the end of regulation, the Bombers drained a deep three to tie the game at 97s after Flanagan penetrated and dished to the wing where Flood knocked down the tying shot to send the game into double overtime.

Ithaca controlled the pace of play for a majority of the second overtime period and would take a six-point lead, 112-106, but the home team would string together a 9-3 run after burying 3-pointers on three straight possessions to tie the game at 115-115 with eight seconds left.  Facing the possibility of a third overtime, Ithaca called a timeout to draw up a final play.  Bevan got the call and drove past the defense, hurling up a last-second lay-up before Chasin hauled down the offensive rebound and lifted the ball off the glass and through the hoop as the horn sounded to give Ithaca the thrilling win.

The Bombers will continue their six-game road trip at 6 p.m. on Wednesday when they take on Elmira in a conference bout.
