ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's basketball team had its four-game winning streak come to an end on Saturday afternoon with a 63-51 loss to St. John Fisher College in an Empire 8 Conference showdown. With the loss, Ithaca is now 7-7 overall and 4-2 in the Empire 8, while Fisher improves to 12-2 and 5-0 in the conference.
During the four-game streak, the Bombers shot at least 43.1-percent from the field and made at least 10 three-pointers in each contest. In this afternoon's contest, Ithaca shot just 39.6-percent (19-for-48) and went 5-for-14 from distance (35.7-percent).
Ithaca led just twice in the game, 2-0 and 4-2, on a jumper from sophomore
Jordan Beers and a pair of free throws from senior
Keri Steele. The Cardinals would tie things up at 4-4 and then tacked one seven more points to go ahead, 11-4, with 3:55 left in the first quarter. Ithaca answered with five straight points to pull to within two at 11-9 before Fisher could get back on the board with 1:09 to go. Beers ended the period with a three-pointer to put Ithaca down by one, 13-12, heading into the second quarter.
In the second, Fisher extended its lead up to eight points at 22-14 just 2:15 in, but Ithaca fought back with a 7-0 run by the 4:33 mark. The Cardinals would then string together nine unanswered points to establish the first double-digit lead of the matchup, 31-21, with 1:22 to go. Sophomore
Erin Woop ended the half going 1-for-2 at the free throw line to send Ithaca into the break down, 31-22.
The Bombers would once again get to within one possession at 33-31 just 3:10 into the third on another three from Beers, but Fisher outscored Ithaca 14-7 the rest of the way to take a nine-point cushion into the final 10 minutes of play.
Fisher's lead went up to 14 points, 52-38, on its second possession of the stanza, but the Bombers would battle all the way back to a five-point spread, 54-49, on an and-one from Steele with 1:44 on the clock. The Cardinals would ice the game at the free throw line, going 9-for-10 over the final 1:44.
Steele finished with a game-high 13 points on 4-of-11 shooting with four rebounds. Beers chipped in eight points, while freshman
Annie Giannone notched a career-high 11 points on a 5-for-7 performance with three assists. Sophomore
Julie Yacovoni added nine points (4-for-6) and five rebounds.
Ithaca travels down to Baruch College on Jan. 19 for a non-conference game at 3 p.m. in New York City.
