Women’s Basketball Falls to St. Lawrence in OT, 67-63

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's basketball team had its three-game winning streak snapped by St. Lawrence on Saturday afternoon, 67-63, in overtime in Ben Light Gymnasium. With the loss, Ithaca is now 3-3 on the season, while St. Lawrence improves to 4-1.

The Bombers were held off the scoreboard over the first 4:15 of the contest until senior Keri Steele put in a layup off a pass from junior Erin Ferguson to make the score 3-2 in favor of St. Lawrence. Ithaca would gain its first lead of the game at 6-5 with 2:43 remaining in the period, but the Saints finished off the quarter on a 9-4 run to take a 14-10 advantage into the second quarter.

In the second stanza, the Bombers were outscored, 18-12, and went into the half trailing by 10 points at 32-22.

Sophomore Jordan Beers led the Ithaca offense with seven points in the first half, while Ferguson pulled down seven rebounds to go along with five points. Steele and four other Bombers chipped in two points in the first half – junior Shayna Gaskins, sophomores Erin Woop and Julie Yacovoni, and freshman Annie Giannone.

Out of intermission, the Bombers scored six straight points to pull to within four at 32-28, but the Saints answered with six unanswered to regain their 10-point cushion. Ithaca would respond with a 10-0 run to end the quarter and head into the final 10 minutes of regulation tied at 38-38.

In the fourth, Ithaca led by as many as five on two different occasions thanks to three-pointers from Beers and Steele. With the Bombers' lead at 53-48 with 2:32 to play, St. Lawrence went on a 7-0 run to earn a 55-53 advantage with eight seconds to play. Beers sent the game into overtime on a layup with 1.2 seconds left on the clock.

The lead would flip back-and-forth for a majority of overtime until St. Lawrence went ahead, 65-63, with 1:15 to go, and iced the game with a pair of free throws with two seconds left in the contest.

Beers finished the game with a career-high 24 points on 8-for-22 shooting to go along with seven rebounds and three assists. She also connected on 4-of-10 from three-point range and made all four attempts at the line.

Ferguson ended up one point shy of a double-double with 10 rebounds and nine points, and had two blocks and two steals. Junior Ali Ricchiuti added eight points, two rebounds and two assists.

Woop and Steele each tallied five points. Woop also grabbed four rebounds with three steals, while Steele snatched five boards with two steals. Yacovoni contributed six points and six rebounds, Gaskins pulled down six rebounds and Giannone scored four points.

Ithaca shot 31.3-percent from the field (21-for-67) and 84.2-percent at the line (16-for-19), but went just 5-for-27 from distance (18.5%). St. Lawrence was 21-for-63 overall (33.3%), 8-for-18 from three-point range (44.4%) and 17-for-23 at the line (73.9%). Both schools tallied 46 rebounds.

There were seven lead changes in the game and five ties.

The Bombers are back in action on Dec. 11 at William Smith. Tip is set for 7 p.m. in Geneva, N.Y.
