Despite Stout Defense, Football Falls at Buffalo State

BUFFALO, N.Y. —The Buffalo State football team entered Saturday's Empire 8 showdown averaging 32.1 points per game, but a stout Ithaca College defense limited the Bengals to just a single touchdown during Saturday's Empire 8 showdown.

It wasn't enough to prevent the Bombers (4-5, 2-5) from dropping their fourth straight game as Ithaca suffered a 7-3 setback in a game played at the University at Buffalo Stadium.

Sophomore Tristan Brown rushed for 89 yards on 22 carries, averaging four yards per carry including a 14-yard run.

Classmate Dan Loizos made 13 tackles, including five solo stops, and junior Anthony Skretny and sophomore Kenny Bradley each added nine stops for the Bombers.

Skretny and senior Malik Morris each forced a fumble, while Bradley, Morris and senior Ryan Michaels had pass breakups in the loss.

Freshman Jimmy Sullivan recorded his first career interception to help keep the Bengals (6-3, 4-3) off the scoreboard.

Senior Brandon Steff did his part to hold the Bengals at bay, averaging 39.2 yards per kick on six punts, with a 51-yarder included in his effort. He boomed two kicks inside the 20-yard line.

Buffalo State drove to the Ithaca 17 on its second possession of the game, but after a holding penalty, Sullivan picked off a pass near the end zone to keep the Bengals off the scoreboard.

Following a punt at the end of the first quarter, Ithaca took over at its own 43 and drove to the Buffalo State 27, but a fumble on fourth down ended the Bomber drive.

Ithaca forced a punt on the Bengals' ensuing possession, and Ithaca took over at its own 20. The Bombers marched 74 yards in 14 plays to get on the scoreboard right before the halftime.

Brown rushed for 33 yards on the drive and senior John D'Onofrio found sophomore Jack Yule for a 14-yard pass completion. Senior Max Rottenecker booted a 23-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining in the second quarter, and Ithaca took a 3-0 lead into halftime.

Buffalo State took the second half kickoff and drove to the Ithaca 29 before Morris stripped Tre Jones of the ball and senior Dan Mancini recovered at the Ithaca 27.

Ithaca maintained its 3-0 lead until the fourth quarter, when Dan Serignese hit Had Bryant for an 11-yard touchdown pass with 11:43 remaining in the game.

On their next drive, the Bombers marched down to the Buffalo State 7-yard line thanks to a pair of 11-yard runs by Brown. Facing fourth and goal from the 12, D'Onofrio's pass was intercepted and Buffalo State took over with 6:35 remaining.

Jones took a first-down handoff, Skretny poked free the football and junior Rob Barbieri recovered at the Buffalo State 20, giving Ithaca a golden opportunity to retake the lead. But the Bombers turned the ball over on downs and Buffalo State ran out the clock to send Ithaca to its first four-game losing streak since 1957.

Ithaca still leads the all-time series 15-10.

The Bombers close out the season hosting rival Cortland in the 57th annual Cortaca Jug game, with a 12 p.m. kickoff Saturday at Butterfield Stadium.

Buffalo State hosts Brockport in its regular-season finale.
