ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College field hockey team mounted a 3-2 comeback win over Stevens on Sunday afternoon in a crucial Empire 8 Conference matchup at Higgins Stadium. The win is Ithaca's first over Stevens since the Bombers won, 2-1, in overtime during the 2007 season.
Ithaca came out aggressively to start the game and fired off five shots over the opening six minutes, but Stevens' goalkeeper was up to the task and stopped each shot.
The first goal of the game came from Stevens with 4:49 left in the first half. The Ducks fired off three shots in a span of five seconds with the last one beating junior
Katie Lass. Prior to the goal, Lass made a pair of diving saves, but could not keep the ball in her control after the second shot.
The Bombers wasted no time to knot the game up at 1-1 in the second half as junior
Colleen Keegan-Twombly put in her 10th goal of the season off a pass from junior
Lauren Delia. Ithaca started the scoring chance off a corner that began with Delia. After two Bombers had a touch, the ball went back to Delia, who found Keegan-Twombly open in front of the net.
Stevens answered just three minutes later to regain the lead at 2-1 off its own corner. The Ducks' initial shot was blocked, but they were able to maintain possession and found a player with an open shot.
Four minutes later, the Bombers tied things up again at 2-2 on a tally from sophomore
Michaela Donohue with the assist going to senior
Olivia Salindong. Once again, Ithaca started things with a corner. After a few touches brought the ball back into the middle of the zone, Salindong sent a short pass over to Donohue, who had a clear shot from five yards out.
With just over 14 minutes left in regulation, senior
Caitlin O'Brien ripped a shot from the left wing of the zone that snuck through the pads of Stevens' goalkeeper into the net for the game-winner. Delia started the corner with a direct pass to O'Brien.
Lass made four saves in the game for her ninth win of the season. The previous six wins for Lass were all shutouts.
Ithaca held a slim, 15-13, edge in shots over Stevens, while the Ducks were awarded one more corner, 9-8.
The Bombers head off on a three-game road trip from Oct. 17 to Oct. 28, where they will play Houghton Utica and Geneseo. Ithaca returns home for Senior Day on Oct. 31 against Brockport at 12 p.m.
