Women's Basketball Continues Winning Ways with 68-59 Victory at Houghton

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's basketball team (16-4) defeated host Houghton (6-13), 68-59, Tuesday night at the Nielsen Center.

Ithaca secured an infinite lead just two minutes into the game. Following a close first half, the Bombers powered ahead by 20 in the second en route to its eighth straight victory. The Highlanders pieced together a late run, but time ran short as Ithaca outlasted Houghton for the victory.

Senior Mary Kate Tierney posted game highs of 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Bombers. Junior Geena Brady added 12 and eight. Rookie Ali Ricchiuti chipped in nine points and seniors Kathryn Campbell and Elisabeth Wentlent added seven each. Junior Samantha Klie dished out five assists and Tierney four.

Houghton tallied the game's first bucket, but a Tierney three, her second of the game, at 17:57 put the Bombers ahead for good. Seven straight Campbell points gave the Bombers a 17-10 advantage at 13:17. They improved their lead to eight on yet another Tierney trey at 8:48 before taking a 34-27 gap into the locker room at the half. The Highlanders twice had the game within three, lastly at 1:28, but Ricchiuti closed out the half with four consecutive for the two-possession lead.

The Highlanders snuck within one on two occasions early in the second half. Ithaca escaped a narrow 42-41 edge at the 14-minute mark with a 21-2 run to lead by 20 at 8:18. Following a Houghton timeout, the squad answered with a streak of its own, cutting within eight, 67-59, at 3:10. Neither team could take care of the ball down the stretch resulting in three turnovers in two minutes. A Jenn Escobido free throw iced the game at 68-59.

Ithaca outrebounded Houghton, 48-30, while shooting 41.7 percent from the floor to the Highlanders' 33.3 percent. Houghton had nine steals during the game, forcing 14 Ithaca turnovers. Both teams were 10-for-14 at the line.

The Bombers return to action Friday and Saturday, Feb. 7-8 hosting Empire 8 opponents Nazareth and St. John Fisher at 8 p.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
