Women's Soccer Earns E8 Co-Championship

Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 18 Ithaca College women's soccer team tied No. 16 Nazareth, 0-0, in the Empire 8 Championship game on Saturday, giving Ithaca a share of the conference title. The Golden Flyers prevailed 4-3 in penalty kicks, giving them the automatic qualification into the NCAA Division III Women's Soccer Championships. With the tie, Ithaca moves to 14-3-1 on the season, while Nazareth goes to 14-3-3.

This season marked the 10th time that Ithaca and Nazareth met in the conference finals, and the sixth time they have been crowned co-champions.

Junior Kelsey King led the Bombers with four total shots, three of which were on goal. Junior goalkeeper Beth Coppolecchia stopped all eight shots she faced in 110 minutes of play, marking her 10th shutout of 2014. As a team, the Bombers have held opponents scoreless 11 times this season.

Solid play from both ends pushed momentum back and forth throughout the contest. Defense and top notch goaltending prevailed in regulation, sending the championship tilt to overtime after 90 minutes of scoreless soccer. After two more scoreless overtime periods, Ithaca and the Golden Flyers were named co-champions as a result of the 0-0 tie.

The game then headed to penalty kicks to decide who would receive the Empire 8's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. After each team scored on 3-of-4 attempts, the AQ went down to a final pairing. The Bombers were unable to score on their final shot, opening the door for Nazareth. The Golden Flyers converted on their final penalty kick, giving them the conference's automatic qualification.

Three Ithaca players were selected for the E8 All-Tournament Team, including Kelsey King, Taylor Baranowsky and Aimee Chimera.

The Bombers will now wait for the NCAA Women's Soccer Selection Show to see if they receive an at-large bit into the NCAA Tournament. The show will air, Monday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m.
