Ithaca Advances To E8 Final With 3-1 Victory

Box Score ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 18 Ithaca College women's soccer team defeated St. John Fisher early Friday afternoon, dropping the Cardinals by a score of 3-1 at Carp Wood Field in the opening game of the Empire 8 Tournament. The win improves the Bombers' record to 14-3-0 on the year.

Junior Sarah Woychick scored twice for Ithaca, while senior Jessie Warren chipped in with one goal in the victory. Junior goalkeeper Beth Coppolecchia made four saves on five Cardinal shots. The Bombers had a large advantage in total shots, registering 17 to St. John Fisher's five. Ithaca also held a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.

Woychick scored her first of the contest just under 10 minutes into the opening half, giving Ithaca the 1-0 advantage. Woychick took a through ball from freshman Kristyn Alonzo at midfield, springing her for a partial breakaway. Woychick fought through a defender at the far side of the box, eventually beating the keeper low for her sixth tally of the season.

Woychick struck again in the 31st minute, adding to the Bomber lead with another breakaway goal. Sophomore Taylor Baranowsky started the play this time around, leading Woychick with a pass from midfield on a clear lane to the net. Woychick faked out the cardinal keeper, and fired a shot to the far left post for her seventh goal of the year.

Warren added the final insurance marker Ithaca would need roughly five minutes later, putting the Bombers ahead, 3-0. Warren collected a pass at the top of the box from Woychick, before sending a shot to the bottom left corner for her first goal of the season.

Strong defense carried the 3-0 score into the closing minutes of the contest, when Fisher finally got on the board in the 89th minute. It wouldn't be enough, as Ithaca held on in the final two minutes for the 3-1 semifinal victory.

The win sends the Bombers to the conference championship game, marking the third-straight year Ithaca has reached the final round of the E8 Tournament. The Bombers will play No. 16 Nazareth at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8 at Carp Wood Field. Nazareth reached the championship with a 2-0 win over Stevens in the second semifinal match.
