Ithaca Women's Lacrosse Team to Host Empire 8 Championship Tournament

ITHACA, N.Y. – For the ninth time in the 11 years of the Empire 8 Championship Tournament, the Ithaca women's lacrosse team (11-5) is making an appearance in the semifinal round. The top-seeded and 14th-ranked Bombers are slated to face fourth-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology (8-9) Saturday at noon at Higgins Stadium. A 3 p.m. semifinal game between second-seeded St. John Fisher (13-3) and third-seeded Nazareth (9-7) will follow. The title contest will take place Sunday at 2 p.m.

A live video webcast and live stats will be available for all three games. VIC Radio will provide a radio broadcast of the championship game. Additional information is available on the tournament site.

Ithaca, who won the conference title in 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2008, defeated the Ducks, 8-6, in Hoboken during regular-season play. Stevens leads the all-time series 5-4 and owns a 2-1 Empire 8 playoff record against the Bombers. Ithaca defeated the Ducks, 12-11, in the 2008 championship game.

Ithaca snapped a five-game Cardinal winning streak in April with a 15-9 league victory. The Bombers have a 10-6 record over Fisher in a series dating back to 2001. The pair has played thrice in Empire 8 playoff action with the Cardinals claiming a 2-1 edge in outcomes.

The Bombers snuck past Nazareth, 11-9, on April 6 for a 13-9 series margin against the Golden Flyers. Ithaca is 6-1 against Nazareth during the Empire 8 postseason, having defeated the Golden Flyers in the championship game in 2003 and 2004 and in the semifinals four times since.

Ithaca enters the tournament having won seven of its last eight contests. The Bombers, who have a league-best 5.71 goals-against average, are outscoring Empire 8 opponents, 105-40. Ithaca tallied a perfect 7-0 conference record to claim the regular-season crown for the second straight season. The Bombers are led by senior Tracy Rivas with 67 points on 49 goals and 18 assists.
