ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's basketball team (17-2, 9-1 Empire 8) defeated host Nazareth (7-14, 4-6 Empire 8), 55-45, on Friday night.
The first half featured nine lead changes. Ithaca held a six-point gap at the five-minute mark, but Nazareth closed out the half with a 10-2 run for a two-point edge at halftime. Ithaca answered in the second, outscoring the Golden Flyers, 35-23, en route to its fourth consecutive victory. The Bombers secured the lead for good at 15:15 of the second and pieced together a 20-10 streak, taking 13 minutes off the clock.
Junior
Kathryn Campbell posted her fourth career double-double, and first of the season, with a 16-point, 11 rebound performance. Senior
Devin Shea also chipped in 16 points and junior
Jenn Escobido grabbed 11 rebounds to go with her eight points. Campbell had a trio of steals and junior
Mary Kate Tierney dished out five assists.
The game got off to a slow start with the Bombers holding a 2-0 lead five minute in. Neither team held more than a three-point gap until a Campbell three-pointer at 5:10 claimed the Bombers an 18-12 margin. The Golden Flyers used seven unanswered to reclaim the lead at 3:46. Nazareth held a 22-20 advantage at intermission.
The lead bounced back-and-forth early in the second. Down three, Ithaca rewrote its deficit to lead by five at 12:26. Nazareth twice had the game within two, but the Bombers steadily increased its advantage for a double-digit lead with 1:18 lingering in the game. Ithaca went on to claim its 17th victory of 2012-13, 55-45.
Ithaca shot 34.4 percent from the floor to the Golden Flyers' 31.9 percent and outrebounded Nazareth, 45-36.
The Bombers return to action on Saturday, Feb. 2 with a 2 p.m. contest at Houghton.
