ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Ithaca women's soccer team (9-0-0, 3-0-0 Empire 8) extended its school-record winning streak to start a season with a 2-0 win over Hartwick (3-4-1, 0-2-1 Empire 8) on Wednesday evening at Carp Wood Field. The seventh-ranked Bombers scored both goals in the latter part of the first half and senior goalkeeper
Becca Salant made five saves and earned her sixth shutout of the season.
The Bombers opened the scoring in the 35th minute on the second goal of the year by freshman
Kelsey King. She took a pass from junior
Ellyn Grant-Keane from the midfield at the top of the penalty area, and slid to the ground while lofting a shot into the upper-right corner of the net.
Four minutes later Ithaca's lead doubled as junior
Jamie Ruddy joined Grant-Keane on a two-on-one counter-attack against the Hartwick defense. Grant-Keane slotted a pass from the right side to Ruddy who was in alone on the goalkeeper and Ruddy scored her second goal of the season.
Ithaca limited Hartwick to six shots in each half, and the Bombers picked up their seventh shutout in nine games this year. The Bombers have allowed only three goals all season.
Next up for Ithaca is an Empire 8 road game Saturday at 2 p.m. at Stevens Institute of Technology.
