Volleyball Team Splits on Day One of Hawk Invitational

New Paltz, N.Y. – The Ithaca College volleyball team (5-2) swept Alfred (1-4), 3-0 (25-23, 25-17, 23-17), before dropping a straight-set loss to host New Paltz (10-1), 3-0 (25-12, 25-19, 25-16), Friday evening on day one of the 2012 Hawks Invitational at the Hawk Center.

In a non-conference match against conference opponent Alfred, senior Marissa Weil led Ithaca's offensive efforts with 18 kills, while junior Justine Duryea added nine and freshman Christine Flannery seven. Weil posted 11 digs and Duryea had 10.

Freshmen Carly Garone and Dylan Gawinski Stern split time at the setter position dishing out 18 and 14 assists, respectively. Gawinski Stern and Flannery each served up career-best three ace performances.

Nine ties opened the first frame before Alfred tallied three consecutive for the largest lead of the match, 14-11. Ithaca responded taking a 17-14 advantage, before snapping a 23-23 deadlock to claim the first 25-23.

Ithaca answered a 12-12 stalemate in the second with 9-2 run to take a 2-0 series lead with a 25-17 victory.

The Bombers pieced together an 8-2 lead in the final frame before the Saxons surged to come within two, 9-7. Ithaca ran away with the third taking a 23-13 double-digit lead, before sealing the match with a 25-17 win.

In the day's second match, Weil again led the squad with 11 kills and added 12 digs. Garone posted 21 assists and Flannery another trio of aces.

The Bombers got behind 12-6 in the first as the Hawks put together a 25-12 first-set win.

The second stint opened in Ithaca's favor as the Bombers claimed a 16-11 advantage, however New Paltz rallied for a 25-19, 2-0 series lead.

The third featured an 8-8 tie, but the Hawks responded with 11 of the next 15 points for a 19-12 gap. The Hawks won in three with a 25-16 third-set victory.

The Bombers are slated to face Johnson & Wales at 10 a.m. Saturday.
