Rivas Nets Six in 16-7 Women's Lacrosse Season-Opening Victory at Rochester

Rochester, N.Y. – The Ithaca women's lacrosse team (1-0) opened its season with a 16-7 victory at Rochester (0-1) on Wednesday afternoon.

The Bombers took an early 2-0 lead before the Yellowjackets knotted action at 2-2. Three straight Ithaca goals followed to secure the Bombers lead indefinitely. Rochester brought it within two, 5-3, at 8:24 of the first before Ithaca scored a trio of goals to close out the half. Two of the first three goals of the second came from Rochester crosses, but Ithaca answered with six straight to take a double-digit lead and power to victory.

Junior Tracy Rivas posted a career-high tying and game-best six goals, and added an assist, to lead the Bombers. Classmate Kim Armbruster netted a career-high tying three goals, had an assist and won a career- and game-high seven draw controls. Junior Michelle Avery and Nicole Borisenok each scored a hat trick for the Bombers – Avery's serving as a career-high performance. Also with career- and game-best showings, sophomore Becky Guzzo dished out four assists, while fellow sophomore Jenna Marchinetti forced three Yellowjacket turnovers.

Junior Jess Worthman had three saves in goal for the Bombers.

Guzzo assisted Borisenok to net the game's first goal just 30 seconds into play. Avery backed it with another at 25:30, but Rochester answered with two of their own. Rivas responded 12 seconds after the Yellowjacket's second with her first of two back-to-back goals. Another from Armbruster presented a 5-2 Ithaca lead. Rochester brought it within two before Armbruster, Borisenok and Avery tallied to lead, 8-3, at intermission.

Mirroring the first goal of the game, Rivas recorded the first of the second stint just 37 seconds into play. Rochester scored two straight before she scored three of six consecutive Ithaca goals for a 15-5 lead at 10:51. Avery, Armbruster and junior Nikki Dahl also posted goals. Rochester managed two scores in the final 3:20 of play, but it was a Borisenok score on a Racquel Lividini assist to ice the game, 16-7, for the Bombers.

Ithaca held a 29-12 advantage in shots, a 16-13 edge in groundballs and a 15-10 gap in draw control victories.

The Bombers will next face Springfield at a neutral site game in Clermont, Fla. on March 12.
