Rochester, N.Y.--The women's lacrosse team (2-3, 1-0 Empire 8) opened the Empire season with a 14-12 win over Rochester Institute of Technology (6-3, 1-1 Empire 8) Friday afternoon. The Bombers outscored the Tigers 3-1 over two overtime periods, with sophomore Nicole Borisenok (Albany Academy for Girls/Watervliet) notching a score in both.
Borisenok opened the overtime scoring three minutes into the first extra period, netting a goal on a pass from senior Kylie McClure (Upper Arlpington/Columbus, Ohio). The score remained 12-11 until the Tigers tied the score with under a minute to play. After each team turned the ball over once, McClure scored with 13 seconds remaining on a free position shot.
Borisenok scored her second overtime goal--and the final goal of the game--just eight seconds into the second extra period, with McClure again picking up the assist.
Both Borisenok and McClure recorded three goals and two assists, leading the team with five points apiece. Junior Katie Hurley (Honeoye Falls-Lima/Honeoye Falls) led the Bombers with four goals scored. She also picked up a team-high five ground balls.
RIT forced overtime by scoring with just six seconds left in regulation to tie the score at 11. Both teams rallied from two-goal deficits in the second half, with the Tigers scoring four unanswered goals to turn an 8-6 deficit into a 10-8 advantage. Borisenok and McClure scored goals within a minute of each other to tie the score at 10, and McClure also netted the score that put the Bombers up 11-10. Neither team scored for nearly ten minutes before RIT's late game-tying goal.
Ithaca took a 5-2 lead to open the game, with Hurley recording four of the game's first seven goals. RIT came back to tie the score at six goals apiece before sophomore Racquel Lividini (Mamaroneck/Mamaroneck) scored in the final minutes of the period to put Ithaca up 7-6 entering halftime.
Freshman Jess Worthman (Hauppauge/Commack) made her first career start in goal and recorded her first collegiate win. She made 11 saves in the victory.
As a team , the Bombers caused 16 turnovers. Senior Katherine Bixby (Germantown Friends/Philadelphia, Pa.) and sophomore Siobhan Sullivan (Franklin/Franklin, Mass.) each forced three.
Ithaca continues Empire 8 play Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at St. John Fisher.
