Volleyball Takes Down Union In Five

Taylor Horton had a career-high six aces

ITHACA, N.Y.--Ithaca defeated 2008 Bomber Invitational champion Union Friday night, closing a perfect first day at the 2009 tournament. The Bombers (4-4) took the maximum five set, downing the Dutchwomen (4-2) 23-25, 25-6, 25-13, 19-25, 15-11. The Bombers had lost their previous four five-set matches. Freshman Stephanie Lavallato (Hunterdon/Flemington, N.J.) led all players with 17 kills, the most by any Bomber this season.

The Bombers never trailed in the fifth set after a Union service error tied the score at five. A pair of Lavallato kills helped Ithaca to a 5-1 run that put Ithaca up 9-6. The Dutchwomen pulled the score within one but, after an Ithaca timeout, committed three errors in four points to put the Bombers on the verge of victory at 14-11. Sophomore Kate Thoene (Voorhees/High Bridge, N.J.) ended the match on the next point, sending a booming kill into the middle of the Union court.

Thoene had 10 kills to go with five blocks in the win. With just two errors, she hit .308. Senior Rachel Busch (Hoover/North Canton, Ohio) also picked up 10 kills.

Lavallato added a career-best 17 digs to her kill total. Sophomore Tina Orlandini (Flintridge Sacred Heart/Altadena, Calif.) had a team best 21 digs, with senior Corinna Doctor (Skaneateles/Skaneateles) adding 18. Doctor also had a season-high 38 assists.

The Bombers dropped the opener after Union closed the set on a 7-2 run, but surged by the Dutchwomen in set two. Ithaca scored the first eight points of the set, and did not allow consecutive Union points until the lead was already insurmountable. Sophomore Taylor Horton (Lakeridge/Lake Oswego, Ore.) picked up three straight aces during the set, and had a career-high six in the match.

Horton's strong serving continued into the third set; she recorded aces on three of the first four points. The Bombers again scored early, taking leads of 9-2 and 13-4. Union pulled the score within four at 14-10, but multiple kills from Thoene and Lavallato highlighted an 8-2 lead that put Ithaca well ahead at 22-12.

Union held off Ithaca late in the fourth set. After falling behind 18-12, the Bombers got within four at 22-17, but could get no closer before the Dutchwomen victory set up the decisive fifth set.
