First Half Scoring Spree Leads To Bomber Victory

Meg Malone scored twice for the Bombers in a 6-5 victory.
ITHACA – The Ithaca field hockey team picked up its first win of the season by defeating Wooster 6-5 on Yavits Field. It was the first home game of the season for the Bombers, who are now 1-1 on the year. Wooster fell to 2-1 with the loss.

Ithaca fell behind early, as Wooster scored in the second minute of play, but the Bombers scored five straight goals in the first half, including a pair from Meg Malone (Rice Memorial/South Burlington, Vt.). The other first-half tallies came off the sticks of Christine Franz (West-Windsor Plainsboro/Plainsboro, N.J.), Courtney Clark (Camden/Boonville) and Krista Fieselmann (Bridgewater-Raritan/Bridgewater, N.J.) on a penalty stroke.

The Fighting Scots scored a late goal in the first half and another early in the second half to make the score 5-3, before senior Elyse Green (Shawnee/Medford, N.J.) scored to re-establish the three-goal lead.

Wooster scored a pair of late goals, but the Bombers held on for the victory. Ithaca held a 14-10 advantage in penalty corners, but Wooster outshot Ithaca 19-15 in the game. Bomber junior goalkeeper Chelsea Welsh (Scotia-Glenville/Scotia) made seven saves and senior back Marisa Frank (Bow/Bow, N.H.) had a defensive save for the Bombers.

The Bombers' six goals in the game marked their highest-scoring effort since a 6-3 win at Houghton in October of 2005.

Ithaca hosts Brockport on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
