ITHACA, N.Y. – The men’s soccer team (5-1-0), which is ranked 15th in the NSCAA coaches’ poll and 25th in the D3kicks.com poll, lost 1-0 to Hamilton (2-0-2) Saturday. The loss was the first of the season for the Bombers, who have lost four of their last five games against the Continentals.
The teams played 62 minutes of scoreless soccer until Hamilton broke the tie. Junior goalkeeper
Andy Wilhelm (Centennial/Ellicott City, Md.) made 6 saves in the loss, including a number of great stops in the second half to keep Ithaca in the game. Wilhelm made a save on a point blank shot in the 74th minute and jumped to deflect a shot over the crossbar with five minutes remaining in regulation.
Ithaca pressured the Hamilton defense late in the game but could not cash in on any scoring chances. Sophomore midfielder
Gerard Lewis (Scotia-Glenville/Scotia) settled a ball inside the 18-yard box and volleyed a shot over the crossbar in the 77th minute. Junior forward
Kurt Odenbach (McQuaid Jesuit/Webster) sent a header wide of the goal in the 83rd minute.
Ithaca outshot Hamilton 12-9 in the game, and the Bombers took eight corner kicks to Hamilton’s five.
The Bomber’s next match is at Cortland on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
