Men's Swimming & Diving Beats Division II Bloomsburg

Josh Tayrien recorded three wins for the Bombers
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The men's swimming & diving team defeated Division II Bloomsburg 139-66 Saturday. Sophomore Mike Ariel (Xavarian Brothers/Norwood, Mass.) was the top performer for Ithaca, winning the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events with respective times of 22.91 and 50.52.
 
Ariel was also a member of the winning 400-yard freestyle relay team that registered a time of 3:25.49 with senior Josh Tayrien (Chaparral/Paradise Valley Ariz.), sophomore Brennan Hagy (LaSalle/Wyndmoor, Pa.) and senior Shea O'Neil (Lower Merion/Baal Cindy, Pa.) and. Tayrien also won the 200- and 500-yard freestyle with times of 1:51.19 and 5:07.37.   
 
Other top finishers for the Bombers included senior Mark Tedeschi (Orchard Park/Orchard Park), who won the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:15.01 and took second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:07.75. That race was won by senior Charles Souzzi (Guilford/Guilford, Conn.) with a time of 2:06.66. Souzzi also finished second in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:08.24 and teamed with Tedeschi, sophomore Ryan Wright (Methacton/Norristown, Pa.) and senior Adam Weber (Mechanicsburg Area/Mechanicsburg Pa.) to win the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 3:46.80. The 200-yard backstroke was won by freshman Matt Carolan (Northampton Area/Walnutport, Pa.) with a time of 2:07.63.
 
Junior Scott Wilson (Springville-Griffith Institute/Springville) finished second in both the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyle with times of 5:08.48 and 10:33.52. Freshman Gary Westerhoff (Kinnelon/Kinnelon, N.J.) finished second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.33. Wright finished second in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:07.50. Junior Casey Degon (Franklin Academy/Malone) and sophomore Brant Gawrys (Ballston Spa/Ballston Spa) finished second and third in the 200-yard breaststroke with respective times of 2:26.39 and 2:32.02.
 
Ithaca returns to action Saturday, traveling to Hamilton with Geneseo and Hartwick for a quad-meet at noon.
