Bombers Fall to Red Hawks in Season Opener

Mike Ariel won two events for the Bombers
ITHACA, N.Y.--The men’s swimming & diving teams hosted RPI for a season-opening dual meet Saturday. The Bombers fell to the Red Hawks 134-105. Sophomore #Mike Ariel# (Xavarian Brothers/Norwood, Mass.) was the top performer for Ithaca, earning victories in the 100- and 200-yard freestyle with times of 49.92 and 1:48.34 respectively.
 
The Bombers also got a win from senior Mark Tedeschi (Orchard Park/Orchard Park) in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:00.65. Ithaca’s swimmers claimed the top three spots in the 1,000-yard freestyle. Junior Scott Wilson (Springville-Griffith Institute/Springville), freshman Scott Carolan (Northampton Area/Walnutport, Pa.) and senior Josh Tayrien (Chaparral/Paradise Valley, Ariz.) clocked in with times of 10:44.19, 10:46.53 and 10:55.97, respectively. Tayrien was Ithaca’s top finisher in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:10.87. The Bombers also won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:41.24, and placed second with a time of 1:32.94 in the 200 yard freestyle relay.
 
Other top finishers for the Bombers included freshman Gary Westerhoff, (Kinnelon/Kinnelon, N.J.) who finished third in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.26. Senior Charles Suozzi, (Guligord/Guliford, Conn.) finished third in the 200-yard individual medley and second in the 100-yard butterfly with times of 2:06.41 and 55.01. Sophomore Mike Blizniak, (Iroquois/East Aurora) took third in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.01.
 
Freshman Andrew Longcore (Red Hook/Red Hook) finished third in the one-meter board with 137.10 points.
 
Ithaca next travels to Cortland for a dual meet Saturday at 4 p.m.
