Ithaca College Baseball Sweeps Four-Game Series Against Utica

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Ithaca College baseball team continued its run of success with a four-game weekend sweep of Utica College over Saturday and Sunday at Freeman Field in Ithaca. It also marked the first four games of the season played at Ithaca's traditional home venue. In Saturday's doubleheader sweep, Ithaca won by scores of 3-2 and 7-3. Sunday's games were carried by the offense as Ithaca totaled 10 runs in each game for 10-8 and 10-3 wins. Ithaca is 19-5 on the season and 7-1 in Empire 8 games. The Bombers will host Rochester at 4 p.m. Tuesday and visit Oneonta at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
 
Saturday Game 1:  ITHACA 3, UTICA 2 | Box Score and Play-by-Play
 
Utica led 2-0 early before Ithaca rallied to claim the victory in the weekend opener. The Pioneers scored single runs in the first and third innings, and Ithaca tied it with two runs in the bottom of the fifth  Christian Brown delivered a sacrifice fly to bring in Matt Connolly with Ithaca's first run and Luke Stark singled to bring in Cameron Oathout with the game-tying run.
 
Ithaca won it in a walk-off in the bottom of the seventh. A one-out single by Cooper Belyea started the rally, followed by a single from Brown to put two men aboard. Luke Stark drew a walk to load the bases, and Tim Henry singled to right field to bring home Belyea with the winning run.
 
Benji Parkes pitched six effective innings before yielding to reliever Jimmy Wagner in the seventh. Wagner earned the win to improve to 3-0 on the year. Parkes allowed two runs on four hits, both were unearned. He had seven strikeouts and issued three walks. Stark and Henry had two hits each for Ithaca.
 
Saturday Game 2: ITHACA 7, UTICA 3 | Box Score and Play-by-Play
 
Ithaca scored two runs in the first and never trailed in a 7-3 victory. Luke Stark led the offense with three hits in a 3-for-4 afternoon, with an RBI and a run scored. Stephen Yanchus and Zach Cole each scored two runs.
 
Andrew Sanders pitched seven innings and picked up the win to improve to 4-1 on the season. He allowed two runs, both earned, on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts. He left the game with a 4-2 lead and was replaced by Brandon Diorio, who earned his first save of the season with two strong innings. Diorio pitched a perfect eighth inning and then Ithaca tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. Diorio allowed one run on three hits in the ninth and closed out the victory.
 
Sunday Game 1: ITHACA 10, UTICA 8 | Box Score and Play-by-Play
 
In Sunday's opener, Ithaca scored twice in the first inning but then fell behind 3-2 in the top of the third. The Bombers responded with four runs in the bottom of the third and went on to the victory despite a late rally by Utica.
 
In the bottom of the first, Tim Henry and Stephen Yanchus had RBI singles for Ithaca. The third-inning rally saw Christian Brown score on a wild pitch and two more runs come in on an infield error. Matt Connnolly had a sacrifice-fly RBI to bring home Yanchus with Ithaca's fourth run of the inning. The Bombers added two in the fourth, one in the fifth and one in the sixth.
 
John Prendergast was the beneficiary of the offensive support, as he picked up his seventh win of the season with five strong innings. He allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits with seven strikeouts and one walk. Ryan Contegni, Chris Anderson and Jimmy Wagner wrapped up the final two innings, with Wagner coming in to get the final out. He struck out a Utica batter with two runners on base to close out the victory, his fourth save of the year.
 
Ithaca slugged 12 hits in the game and nine of those came from the top three spots in the lineup as Brown, Luke Stark and Henry had three hits each. Stephen Yanchus hit his first career home run in the fifth inning, a solo shot to left field. Henry drove in four runs in the contest.
 
Saturday Game 2: ITHACA 10, UTICA 3 | Box Score and Play-by-Play
 
The Bombers closed the weekend with the most lopsided margin of the series behind another strong day at the plate. Ithaca had 13 hits and scored at least one run in five of their eight times at bat. Ithaca built a 2-0 lead with a run in each of the first two innings. Colby Gee had an RBI triple in the first and Ryan Henchey had an RBI single in the second inning.
 
Utica rallied to take a 3-2 lead with a run in the fourth and two in the top of the fifth, but that was all of the scoring they managed in the game. Ithaca regained the lead in the bottom of the fifth with two runs on RBI singles by John Stanley and Gee. Another run came in the seventh, and Ithaca added five more in the eighth. The eighth-inning was highlighted by Yanchus' second homer of the afternoon and a two-run single for Gee that scored Brown and Henchey.
 
Logan Barer (1-1) earned the win in relief. He entered with one out in the top of the fifth inning and allowed just one hit and two walks in his 4.2 innings. He had four strikeouts. David Jasukonis started and allowed three earned runs on four hits in four and a third with four strikeouts and four walks.
 
Gee was 3-for-5 with a triple and four RBIs. Henchey went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. John Stanley had two hits.
