Ithaca Wrestling Takes Second At Regionals; Qualifies Six For NCAAs

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The Ithaca College wrestling team placed second among 18 teams at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Northeast Regional Championship and qualified six individual wrestlers to the NCAA Division III Championships March 14-15 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A successful tournament saw Ithaca capture championships in two weight classes, add runner-up finishes in three more and a third-place finish to qualify for the nationals.

Ithaca's weight-class champions were Alex Gomez at 133 pounds and Kristopher Schimek at 165 pounds.

Gomez won his semifinal match by 12-1 major decision and then won the championship match by 7-5 decision over second-seeded Silas Murray of Rhode Island College, who is ranked 10th nationally by the NWCA. Gomez is ranked fourth in the nation and will make his second consecutive trip to the nationals, where he earned all-America honors last year with a sixth-place finish. Gomez improved his record this season to 27-3.

Schimek rolled through the 165-pound bracket with four wins on the weekend to improve his overall record to 32-2. Schimek won his semifinal by a 3-0 decision and faced 10th-ranked Collin Crowell of Roger Williams in the final. Schimek won the title by a 15-0 technical fall in 4:22. Schimek will be making his first trip to the NCAA Division III championships, but he was a two-time all-American at Niagara County Community College.

The Bombers had three second-place finishers, as they were Jimmy Kaishian at 125 pounds, Dominick Giacolone at 141 and Kevin Collins at 157.

Kaishian won his semifinal match by 6-1 decision over Brian Amato of Worcester Polytechnic Institute to clinch a berth at nationals. Kaishian fell in the finals by a 6-2 score. Kaishian will make his first trip to the NCAAs in his freshman season.

Giacolone will make his second-straight trip to the NCAAs. He won his semifinal match by a 3-2 score in the second tiebreaker period, but fell to fourth-ranked Brian Bistis of Cortland in the finals by first-period pin.

At 157, Collins scored a semifinal win over the top-seeded and seventh-ranked Everet Desilets of Johnson & Wales. Collins got that victory by a 4-3 decision, before dropping a 6-0 decision against 10th-ranked Jorge Lopez of Williams. Collins is making his first NCAA appearance.

Carlos Toribio became Ithaca's sixth qualifier when he took third at 174. Toribio was pinned in the second period in his semifinal match, but came back to win twice in the consolation bracket. He won the consolation semifinal by 9-3 decision and the third-place match by a 5-4 score. It will be the first NCAA trip for Toribio.

Also on Sunday, Shane Bartrum placed fourth at heavyweight. He lost 3-2 to the top-seeded wrestler in the semifinals, but won his next match by a 3-2 decision. He was in a tiebreaker against Caruso of Bridgewater State and lost 2-1.

Ithaca's six qualifiers matches a total of six wrestlers at nationals in 2012.
