ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Ithaca women's swimming & diving team captured its fifth Upper New York State Collegiate Swimming Association championship in six seasons, and its 14th Empire 8 championship following the final day of competition at the Athletics & Events Center Aquatics Pavilion. Ithaca finished with 1,443 points, beating out Stevens Institute of Technology's total of 1,264 points.
The Bombers swept the women's awards, as freshman
Grace Ayer was named Swimmer of the Meet and classmate
Nickie Griesemer was named Diver of the Meet. Head coach
Paula Miller earned Coach of the Year honors and diving coach
Mike Wantuck was named Diving Coach of the Year.
In the 1,650-yard freestyle, freshman
Miranda Wingfield paced the Bombers with a fifth place finish. Her time of 17:47.78 earned her all-state honors and marked the second fastest time in school history.
Ithaca had a strong showing in the 100-yard freestyle, as three Bombers made the A Final to earn all-state honors. Freshman
Lake Duffy placed second with a time of 52.68, while sophomore
Lauren Cox finished seventh with a time of 53.75. Freshman
Erin Hackett rounded out the A Final with a time of 54.09 for an eighth place finish.
Similar to Friday, the women dominated in the backstroke. Ayer,
Kylie Bangs and junior
Megan Buisman all placed in the top five of the 200-yard backstroke and met NCAA B qualifying standards. Ayer took first with a time of 2:03.49, marking a new Ithaca program record. Bangs finished in 2:03.87 to earn second place, while Buisman placed fourth with a time of 2:03.99.
Freshman
Aleksa Lapinas paced Ithaca in the 200-yard breaststroke, finishing seventh overall with a time of 2:27.57.
The Bombers dominated in the 3-meter dive, taking the top three spots to complete Ithaca's sweep of all diving events for the meet. Griesemer placed first with a score of 541.00 to set a new championship record.
Emily Warfle took second with a score of 508.00, while
Heather Markus placed third with a score of 493.75.
Ithaca capped off the evening with a second place finish in the 400-yard freestyle relay. The team of Ayer,
Elizabeth Gawrys,
Cassie Papaleo and Duffy finished the race in 3:31.37, earning them a National B cut and the second fastest time in program history.
