ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Ithaca College wrestling team has three wrestlers ranked in the top-10 of their weight classes and the team stands 15th in the latest National Wrestling Coaches Association Division III rankings. Ithaca (11-4) returns to action Friday night with a dual match at ninth-ranked Wilkes.
Alex Gomez remains first in the 133-pound weight class rankings and was also named Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Co-Wrestler of the Week for Feb. 11, 2014. Gomez convincingly won three bouts Saturday at Oneonta. He won his first two bouts by technical fall and his third by pin to improve his overall record to 22-2 on the year. Gomez won 17-2 in a second-period tech fall over Wesleyan to start the day, and followed that up with a 22-7 tech in his second match against Williams. The decisive points came with just three seconds remaining in the second period. In the final dual of the day, Gomez pinned a wrestler from Oneonta at 2:47.
Kristopher Schimek held on to the second spot in the 165-pound weight class. He has a team-leading 26 victories and is 26-2 overall. Included in that mark is a perfect 14-0 record in dual matches. Schimek has nine wins by major decision, two tech falls and four pins.
Carlos Toribio moved into the NWCA rankings at 174 pounds. He has been ranked as an individual by d3wrestle.com, and is sixth in his weight class by the coaches' association with an overall record of 20-3 on the year. Toribio is 10-1 in dual matches and has bonus points in half of his overall victories with five major decisions, two tech falls and three pins.
