Ithaca Volleyball Rolls to Back-to-Back Wins Over Penn College and Misericordia

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. – The Ithaca College volleyball team (8-12) blanked Penn College of Technology (4-12), 3-0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-14) and outlasted Misericordia (7-9), 3-2 (24-26, 25-21, 25-27, 25-18, 15-10), Saturday on day two of the Lycoming Tip-Off Classic at Lamade Gymnasium. Rookie Molly Brown, who set for a season-best 50 assists against the Cougars, was named to the all-tournament team.

Against the Wildcats, the Bombers served up 14 aces and hit .316, its third-best hitting percentage of the season. Seniors Syline Kim and Justine Duryea powered the offense with seven kills each; sophomore Dylan Gawinski Stern added six. Kim served up a career-high tying six aces. Brown set for 30 assists. Defensively, Duryea led the Bombers with seven digs. Freshman Breanne Tuohy recorded three solo blocks.

The match opened in Ithaca's favor 9-1. It maintained its cushion for a 25-14 first-set win. A 9-2 run led to a double-digit Bomber gap and 25-9 second-set final. The third frame opened in back-and-forth fashion and was tied five times. The Bombers inched ahead with a 13-5 streak to secure their fifth 3-0 win of 2013.

Ithaca had three tally double-digit kills in its fourth five-setter of the season. Freshman Shaelynn Schmidt had 14, classmate Grace Chang put away 13 and Hutchinson hit for .476 while recording a career-best 12 on 21 swings. Chang had 31 digs and Kim 21.

The Cougars secured the first game in extra points. Despite Ithaca owning a 22-19 lead, Misericordia battled to tie the set at 23 en route to a 26-24 win. The Bombers evened action with a 25-21 second-set victory. Ithaca jumped out to a 10-5 advantage and kept the lead indefinitely. The Blue & Gold held off the Cougars as they crept within one on five occasions. Misericordia jumped out to a 12-4 lead in the third, but needed extra points to claim the set. The Bombers tied it up at 23, 24 and 25, but a Cougar kill and an Ithaca attack error led to Misericordia taking the third. The Bombers snapped a 10-10 deadlock in the fourth with a 13-4 run and went on to tie-up the series, 2-2. Ithaca continued to control the match in the fifth. The Bombers put away three straight to crack a 4-4 tie and held off the Cougars for a 15-10 final.

Ithaca will travel to the Nazareth Tournament Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4-5.
