Three Student-Athletes, Men's XC Team Earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Status

NEW ORLEANS, La. – The 2012 Ithaca men's cross country team earned all-academic status from the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Seniors Nathan Bickell and David Geary and freshman Sawyer Hitchcock were among 162 student-athletes to be named to the USTFCCCA Division III All-Academic team. With a grade point average of 3.579, Ithaca was one of 141 teams to earn all-academic recognition.

Bickell was named Empire 8 Runner of the Year. He crossed the finish line first in 26:11.44 at the Empire 8 Championships to earn Runner of the Meet honors and First Team All-Empire 8 nods. A week later, he ran to a 15th-place finish at the NCAA Regionals with a 25:57.40 finish. Bickell capped his career with an individual bid to the NCAA Championships where he knocked five seconds off his career-best time to finish 127th out of 280 runners in 25:52.80.

Geary placed 30th at the NCAA Atlantic Region race, clocking all-region honors with a season-best time of 26:15.00 in the eight-kilometer race. He also placed fourth overall at the Empire 8 championship to be named to the All-Empire 8 First Team.

Hitchcock was the top rookie at the conference championship with a sixth-place finish of 26:49.46. He was later named Empire 8 Rookie of the Year. He collected all-region honors with a 25th-place finish at the Atlantic Region meet, earning an at-large individual bid to the NCAA Championships. Hitchcock clocked his career-best 8K time of 26:01.50 to place 149th.

The Bombers ran to their sixth Empire 8 crown in October, and third straight, before placing seventh at the NCAA Atlantic Region Championship. They also placed third at the NYSCTC Championship.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 or greater through the most-recent semester and placed in the top 35 at the NCAA Regional Championships.

To qualify as a USTFCCCA all-academic cross country team, the team must have had a cumulative team GPA of 3.10 or better. Ithaca was one of two Empire 8 schools recognized on the list.
