ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Ithaca College wrestling team and several individual wrestlers continued to move up in the national rankings as the year-end team and individual polls were released by the National Wrestling Coaches Association and D3wrestle.com for the conclusion of the calendar year 2013.
In the NWCA Division III rankings, Ithaca moved from seventh to a season-best ranking of sixth in the Dec. 17 poll with a 4-0 dual-meet record. Ithaca also scored a tournament index of 16 with four wrestlers appearing in individual weight-class rankings. Ithaca's tournament index score ranks 10th nationally and is determined by a simulated tournament-scoring format based on where individual wrestlers stand within weight-class rankings.
At 133 pounds,
Alex Gomez is ranked second nationally. He was previously ranked first in his weight class, and wrestled only once in the term between polls and has an 8-2 overall record this season.
Dominick Giacolone moved up to sixth in the 141-pound weight class. Giacolone has an 11-2 overall record on the season and is 4-0 in Ithaca's dual matches.
Two Ithaca wrestlers moved into the national rankings for the first time this year.
Kristopher Schimek is 10th at 165 pounds and
Carlos Toribio is 10th at 174 pounds. These two wrestlers were also Ithaca's most recent recipients of Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Honors, as Toribio earned ECWC Rookie of the Week for the week of Dec. 10 and Schimek won the ECWC Wrestler of the Week award for Dec. 17. Toribio is 11-2 on the season and Schimek is 12-2. They share the team lead with two wins each by technical fall.
The D3wrestle.com team rankings are meant to mimic tournament finish at the NCAA Championships and Ithaca stands 11th in the team rankings with a projection of 19 tournament points. In individual rankings, Gomez is second at 133, Giacolone stands eighth at 141, and Toribio is 10th at 174. These rankings also classify wrestlers under contender and honorable mention status. In the contender category, Schimek is listed at 165 pounds. Honorable mention selections for Ithaca included

Kevin Collins at 157 pounds.
Ithaca returns to action Jan. 10-11 at the Budd Whitehill National Duals.
