Ithaca Wrestling Places Eighth At NYS Championships

ITHACA, N.Y. -- The seventh-ranked Ithaca College wrestling team placed eighth in a field of 19 teams at the 2013-14 New York State Collegiate Wrestling Championships hosted by Cornell University. Ithaca had four place-winners in the event, which included NCAA Division I, Division III and NJCAA institutions. Only one Division III school finished ahead of Ithaca, which earned 41.5 points in the team standings.

The Bombers have finished in the top-10 of the NYS Championships in their last 10 appearances at the tournament dating back to the 2002-03 season. Ithaca did not participate in the 2004-05 campaign.

Ithaca's efforts were led by Matt Booth in the 197-pound weight class. Booth placed seventh with three wins and two losses in his bracket. He dropped his opening match against a wrestler from Binghamton, then responded with a pair of decision victories in the consolation bracket. After falling in the consolation quarterfinals, Booth then won the seventh-place match by pin in 1:23 over Zeal McGrew of Hofstra.

Three Bombers placed eighth in the weight classes. Jimmy Kaishian was eighth at 125 pounds with two decision victories and two losses in his first four bouts. He dropped the seventh-place match in the first tie-breaker round. Alex Gomez was eighth at 133 with a 3-2 record as he opened the tournament with a 17-4 major decision and added two more decision victories. He conceded a medical forfeit in the seventh-place bout. Dominick Giacolone was eighth at 141. He started his tournament with a 2-0 decision win and earned another decision victory in the consolation bracket, and also had a medical forfeit in the seventh-place match.

At 174 pounds, Carlos Toribio decisively won his first two bouts, scoring technical fall victory (17-2) in the opening round and a 16-5 major decision in the second round before dropping his next two matches. Kristopher Schimek at 165 and Kevin Collins at 157 scored major decisions in their tournament brackets.

Ithaca returns to action Dec. 7 at the Spartan Invitational hosted by York College in Pennsylvania.
