Biography
2006-07: Akey earned Empire 8 Rookie of the Meet honors at the conference indoor championships after winning the high jump and triple jump titles. Akey was also a member of the conference runner-up 1,600-meter relay squad (3:33.71). That relay squad placed eighth in the state meet, earning all-NYSCTC honors. Akey also placed eighth in the state indoor pentathlon. At the state outdoor championships, Akey competed in four events, placing 14th in the 400-meter hurdles (58.47), 16th in the 110-meter hurdles (16.54) and 18th in the long jump and triple jump. Akey recorded five top-five finishes in the outdoor season. In the Ithaca Open, Akey placed second in the 110-meter hurdles (16.97) and third in the 400-meter hurdles (58.67).
High School: A 2006 graduate of South Burlington High School, Akey was a four-year letter winner as a member of the indoor and outdoor track & field teams and served as team captain his senior year. During the indoor season he was a two-time state champion in the 55-meter hurdles and he is the state record-holder in that event. Akey was the state runner-up in the high jump and was named team MVP during his senior campaign. During the outdoor season he captured the bronze medal in the 110-meter hurdles at the state championships his junior and senior years. Akey was named the team’s Outstanding Field Athlete as a junior and was named the Most Outstanding Track Athlete as a senior.
Personal: A math education major, he is the son of Martha and John Akey.
