2018-19 ECWC All-Academic Team

2018-19 ECWC All-Academic Team

The Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) released its annual list of top academic achievers on Wednesday, March 28, 2019. The conference recognized 59 total student-athletes on the 2018-19 ECWC All-Academic Team in the announcement. The presentation marked an increase of 15 wrestlers compared to the past two years when the conference recognized 44 honorees in both the 2016-17 and 2017-18 seasons.

Recipients of this honor must have a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average or higher (through the last eligible grading period of the current academic year), or have maintained a 3.30-or-better over the past two completed semesters. Wrestlers must also have competed in three separate events during the season in order to gain consideration. Freshmen and transfers that have been enrolled full-time for at least one semester are eligible to receive this honor.

RIT led the way in Wednesday's release, as 13 honorees were recognized. The list of Tigers' wrestlers that appeared in the release were: Owen Albanese, Joseph Cotugno, Colby Hall, Christopher Horton, Ian Houck, Dempsey King, Joseph Lupisella, Michael McGowan, Joseph Monteleone, Morgan Seller, Christopher St. Denny, Zachary Stedeford, and Jacob Warner. For Albanese, Monteleone and Warner it marked the second straight season that they appeared on the ECWC All-Academic Team, while Joseph Cotugno achieved the recognition for a third time during his career.

Ithaca was next in line with 12 honorees in 2018-19. The Bombers group included: Jake Ashcraft, Ben Brisman, Demetri D'Orsaneo, Dalton Elias, Brandon Judge, Greg Lee, Ferdinand Mase, Logan Ninos, Jake O'Brien, Joe Rorick, and Austin Whitney. For Ashcraft, Mase and O'Brien it marked the fourth consecutive season that they appeared on the All-Academic Team. Three-time honorees included Brisman, D'Orsaneo, Lee, Rorick, and Whitney. Elias became a two-time honoree with Wednesday's announcement as well.

SUNY Cortland also saw a jump for a third second straight season, rising from nine honorees in 2017-18 to 11 total honorees this season. The Red Dragons list included: Sean Dall, Matt Davis, Josh Farrar, Ben Klei, CJ Labate, Ben Lloyd, Matt Maquet, Matt Norris, Ryan O'Shea, Jeremy Pond, and Zack Zupan. For Davis, Lloyd and Maquet it was the second time earning ECWC All-Academic praise. Matt Norris also joined the aforementioned senior group from Ithaca as a four-time honoree on the list.

Brockport posted 10 members on the list. The Golden Eagles group included: Jackson Bell, John Cantwell, Timothy Collins, Richard Conte, Chris Eames, Dan Emblidge, Calik Kennedy, Casey Provost, Austin Reed, and Kole Taylor.

SUNY Oneonta finished with eight members on the 2018-19 All-Academic Team. The group included: James Bethel, Eric Brach, Matthew Burge, Jacob Mansman, Thomas Marrone, Daniel Murphy, Michael Savello, and Michael Smith. Murphy became a four-time honoree with the announcement, while Bethel earned praise for a third time during his career. Brach and Savello were the others to earn repeat honors, each garnering recognition for a second straight season.

Oswego State posted four wrestlers on the list, which continued a trend of improvement for two straight seasons. Earning recognition for the Lakers were: Nicolai Celestain, William Hardin II, Isaac Mathews, and Alejandro Thaureaux. Mathews was a repeat honoree, earning recognition for the second straight season. Alfred State also had one honoree in Tristan Almeter in the program's first season back in the ECWC.
