2017-18 ECWC All-Academic Team

2017-18 ECWC All-Academic Team

For the second consecutive season, the Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference (ECWC) honored 44 wrestlers as members of the 2017-18 ECWC All-Academic Team.

Recipients of this honor must have a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average or higher (through the last eligible grading period of the current academic year), or have maintained a 3.30-or-better over the past two completed semesters. Wrestlers must also have competed in three separate events during the season in order to gain consideration. Freshmen and transfers that have been enrolled full-time for at least one semester are eligible to receive this honor.

Ithaca led the way among ECWC programs, posting 15 wrestlers on the list for a second straight season. Highlighting IC's list were four wrestlers who became three-time All-Academic honorees in juniors Jake Ashcraft, Anthony Fano, Ferdinand Mase, and Jake O'Brien. Six additional wrestlers were two-time selections in Ben Brisman, Demetri D'Orsaneo, Greg Lee, Tanner Nielsen and Joe Rorick. Notably, Austin Whitney also became a two-time honoree; earning the honor as a freshman when he was still with SUNY Cortland and earning his most recent honor with the Bombers. Five additional Ithaca wrestlers earned praise on the list for the first time.

SUNY Oneonta finished in second-place in terms of numbers with 12 appearing on the list, which was four more than last year's eight honorees. Five of the 12 had appeared on the list in past year's. The Red Dragons had one four-year honoree in Matthew Marino, one three-time honoree in Daniel Murphy and three wrestlers earning selection for the second time in Anthony Messina, Kevin Knox, and James Bethel. Seven Oneonta grapplers were first-time honorees.

SUNY Cortland also saw a jump from three members on the list in 2016-17 to nine honorees on the 2017-18 list. The Red Dragons had a pair of three-time honorees on the list in Matthew Bradice and Matthew Norris, while Zach Gifford appeared on the release for a second straight season. RIT ranked fourth in the league with seven members on the list. For the Tigers, Coty Lutz became a three-time honoree, while Joe Cotugno picked up praise for a second time.

Oswego State rounded out the team standings with three wrestlers on the list, which was a two-slot improvement over last season. All three Lakers' wrestlers were first-time honorees.

The following is the full list of 2017-18 All-Academic Team honorees.
