Week #11: February 5 - February 11, 2018

Wrestler of the Week: Adrian Berry (Sr.) | 184 LB | SUNY Cortland
 
Berry used a second-period takedown and two third-period escapes to earn a 4-2 upset win over nationally eighth-ranked Troy Seymour of Oswego at 174 pounds. Berry’s win helped the Red Dragons earn an 18-14 dual victory over the host Lakers. Berry improved to 14-6 on the season with the victory.

Rookie of the Week: Matt Maquet (Fr.) | 141 LB | SUNY Cortland

Maquet recorded a 4-2 decision over Oswego’s Justin DeLucia at 141 pounds during the Red Dragons’ 18-14 road dual victory over the Lakers. Maquet upped his season record to 16-11 with the win.
 

Week #10: January 29 - February 4, 2018

Wrestler of the Week: Jake O'Brien (Jr.) | 285 LB | Ithaca
 
No Ithaca wrestler had a tougher assignment this past weekend than junior heavyweight grappler Jake O’Brien. Entering the weekend ranked fifth by the NWCA and third by d3wrestle.com, he certainly cemented his status as a national title contender with a pair of victories over other nationally-ranked 285-pounders. O’Brien went 3-0 on the day to improve to 21-4 on the year.
 
First, O’Brien took on James Bethel (4th NWCA | 5th d3wrestle.com) to put a cap on the Bombers 33-6 victory over SUNY Oneonta. Saturday marked the first meeting between the two ECWC grapplers this season, as O’Brien was held out of the ECWC Championships, in which Bethel took home the 285-pound title, due to injury. The anticipated matchup lived up to the billing, with O’Brien securing a tightly-contested 2-1 decision. O’Brien faced another incredibly tough matchup in the second match of the day against Isaiah Bellamy (3rd NWCA | 4th d3wrestle.com) of host Wesleyan (Conn.). Bellamy entered the day ranked the most dominant wrestler pound-for-pound in NCAA Division III, leading the country with 17 falls and averaging 5.28 team points per bout. O’Brien neutralized the touted foe, in another razor-thin bout by a 3-2 decision. The junior took home his third victory of the day when he was unopposed in the Bombers’ final bout of the day, a 43-6 victory over the Ephs.

Rookie of the Week: Dymir Davis-Carruth (Fr.) | 197 LB | Ithaca

Davis-Carruth picked up a victory in his lone bout of the day on Saturday. Seeing his first action since mid-January at the ECWC Championships, he jumped back into the lineup at 197-pounds in IC’s matchup against SUNY Oneonta. The Ithaca rookie controlled matters from the outset, defeating Peter Pjetri of the Red Dragons in a 10-3 decision. The win improved his record to 10-9 on the year and 3-1 in dual meets.
 

Week #9: January 22 - January 28, 2018

Co-Wrestler of the Week: James Bethel (Sr.) | 285 LB | SUNY Oneonta
 
The senior co-captain helped lead his team to three dual meet victories with his 3-0 performance at the John Reese duals at Wilkes University on Sunday.  James recorded a technical fall 16-0 over H. Lowbar in the team’s 43-5 opening round win over Lackawanna.   Then with the outcome of both dual meets coming down to the final HWT bouts, he recorded first period pins over D. Allen of Washington &  Jefferson in 0:47, and R. Thompson of Wilkes in 1:46.   The pins by Bethel helped lift Oneonta to a 30-24 victory over W&J, a 24-20 win over host Wilkes University, while improving the team’s overall dual meet record to 10-2 on the season.

Co-Wrestler of the Week: Triston Engle (Jr.) | 197 LB | Brockport

No. 9 ranked Triston Engle was dominant for the Brockport wrestling team throughout the week, going 4-0 and helping lead the Golden Eagles to three more wins. He pinned two of his four opponents, including an opening round pin agains Alfred State on Tuesday en route to a 46-5 win.

Rookie of the Week: Kaidon Winters (Fr.) | 157 LB | RIT
 
Winters won all three of matches at the John Reese Duals hosted by Wilkes University on Sunday. Winters won his first match vs. Keystone via forfeit, he recorded a pair of pins over Wilkes and Lackawanna to improve to 34-7 on the season and 14-1 in dual matches. His 18 wins by pins are tied for the second most in one season at the university, one shy of the mark of 19, held by three-time NCAA Champion Matt Hamill.
 

Week #8: January 15 - January 21, 2018

Co-Wrestler of the Week: Jonathan Haas (Sr.) | 125 LB | Brockport
 
In the 125-lb weight class at this past weekend's Empire Collegiate Wrestling Conference Championships, Haas breezed by all of his opponents, using a pair of pins to get to the championship bout where he beat Oswego's Hunter Howland by a 13-3 major decision. Haas is still undefeated in 2017-18, and is the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the country at the 125-lb weight class. It was the second consecutive year that Haas took home the 125-pound title, while he earned Co-Most Outstanding Wrestler, his second straight year taking home the honor.

Co-Wrestler of the Week: James Bethel (Sr.) | 285 LB | SUNY Oneonta

Senior James Bethel (Saugerties/Saugerties) earned honors as the Co-Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Championship after completing a 4-0 day and capturing the heavyweight title for the second time of his career. En route to a first place finish, Bethel also earned his 100th career victory in the second match of the day with a pin of Owen Albanese of RIT in 1:45. Bethel's day included three pins and a major decision.
 

Week #7: January 8 - January 14, 2018

Co-Wrestler of the Week: Alex Herringshaw (Fr.) | 165 LB | Oswego State
 
Alex Herringshaw was a force to be reckoned with at the Budd Whitehill Division III Duals over the weekend. First, Herringshaw earned a crucial 16-0 technical fall at 165 to help Oswego to a 21-17 win over No. 18 Wesleyan. In Oswego's second match of the day, the sophomore picked up four team points with a major decision (14-3) over his The College of New Jersey opponent. In the Lakers' final competition on Friday, Herringshaw collected his third victory of the day when he won by a 6-2 decision. The Holland Patent native followed up with his fourth win of the weekend on Saturday with a technical fall against his Springfield opponent. For his undefeated performance, Herringshaw was named to the All-Tournament team.
 
Co-Wrestler of the Week: Greg Chery (Sr.) | 157 LB | SUNY Cortland
 
Chery was named to the all-tournament team at the Budd Whitehill Duals after posting a 4-0 record with a pin. He opened the tournament with a pin in Cortland’s 26-19 win over Waynesburg and posted a 6-3 decision during a dual loss to Roger Williams. He finished Day 1 with a 5-2 decision versus Wisconsin-Stevens Point to help Cortland rally from an early 15-3 deficit to win 19-18. Chery closed his weekend Saturday with a 7-5 decision to lead another Red Dragon rally, this time from a 18-6 hole after four matches in a 29-21 win over Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
 
Cortland finished 3-1 at the tournament and place fifth out of 16 schools. Chery is 19-6 this season with seven pins, including an 11-2 mark in dual matches.
 
Rookie of the Week: Austin Dean (Jr.) | 285 LB | Brockport
 
In his first collegiate wrestling action, Dean came out strong, pinning both of his opponents on Saturday en route to a pair of wins for Brockport. The junior, who is also an All-Conference defensive lineman on the football team, first pinned John Carroll's Bryce Carmichael in 1:09, before following it up with another win by fall over Case Western Reserve's Brian McNamara.
 

Week #6: January 1 - January 7, 2018

Wrestler of the Week: Jake Ashcraft (Jr.) | 184 LB | Ithaca

Ashcraft posted a perfect 4-0 record this past week, as the Bombers went 3-1 against the nation’s top competition at the NWCA National Duals in Fort Wayne, Ind. The IC junior played a pivotal role in helping the Bombers to a third-place finish, which represented the program’s highest finish in history, as Ithaca scored dual victories over #21 Centenary (N.J.), #6 Wisconsin-Whitewater, and #2 Johnson & Wales (R.I.). Ashcraft finished the event with three victories by fall and one win by decision over the two days to improve his record to 22-3 on the year with a team-best 13 of those triumphs coming by way of pins. Ashcraft’s best day came on Friday, as he scored a victory by fall in 7:24 over nationally-ranked Tyler Lutes (3rd NWCA | 3rd d3wrestle.com) in Ithaca’s 32-15 defeat to No. 1 Wartburg. He followed that up with a 5-4 decision over Khamri Thomas (5th NWCA | 6th d3wrestle.com) in IC’s 22-11 win over No. 2 Johnson & Wales.

Rookie of the Week: Kaidon Winters (Fr.) | 157 LB | RIT

Winters placed third in the Citrus Invitational, defeating 7th ranked Jazikoff in a third-place match over the winter break. The RIT rookie continued the momentum into this past week’s action. Winters won both of his matches at the NY/PA Duals hosted by King’s to improve to 25-5 on the season. He opened the day with a 2-0 win over Hadyn Swartwood at 157 lbs. of Lycoming, then pinned Tony Immediato of King’s in 2:49 as RIT went 1-1 on the day.
 

Week #5: December 4 - December 10, 2017

Wrestler of the Week: James Bethel (Sr.) | 285 LB | SUNY Oneonta

Bethel recorded three wins this past Saturday at the North East Duals hosted by Oneonta. Bethel recorded one pin and two decisions in his three bouts for the afternoon. Bethel started his day with a 5-2 decision against Jesse Webb of Castleton University. He followed with a pin of Nick Day of WPI in 1:23 before ending his day with a 3-0 victory against Jonah Auriello of Johnson & Wales University. For the season, Bethel is 14-2 overall with six pins.

Rookie of the Week: Matt Maquet (Fr.) | 141 LB | SUNY Cortland

Maquet won both of his matches at 141 pounds at the North/East Duals in Oneonta. He recorded a pin in 5:52 versus Castleton and won by decision against WPI (score not available). Maquet is 9-6 this season with four pins.
 



Week #4: November 27 - December 3, 2017

Wrestler of the Week: Jake Ashcraft (Jr.) | 184 LB | Ithaca

Entering the day ranked fifth in the country by the NWCA at 184-pounds, Ashcraft was dominant in rolling up four straight victories to capture his first division crown of the early season. Earning a first-round bye as the division's second overall seed, he began his day in the second round with a matchup against Thaddeus Jeffries of Brockport. He pinned the ECWC foe in the first period (1:09). Ashcraft scored another first-period fall (1:13) when took down Isaac Morales of Johns Hopkins. The tests got even tougher in the semifinal round, as Ashcraft faced ninth-ranked NWCA wrestler Francis Krauss (8th d3wrestle.com) of host-team York (Pa.). Despite the lofty ranking, Ashcraft got up on the Spartan grappler and never looked back, running away with a 15-0 technical fall. Facing sixth-ranked NWCA foe (3rd d3wrestle.com) Khamri Thomas of Johnson & Wales (R.I.) in the final, Ashcraft locked in his third fall of the day, scoring the pin in 4:25. Ashcraft is now 16-3 on the year in wrestled bouts with 10 of those victories coming by way of fall.

Co-Rookie of the Week: Kaidon Winters (Fr.) | 157 LB | RIT

Winters won his first three matches of the RIT Invitational at 157 lbs., all by fall, before dropping a 9-1 decision to Tyler Marsh of WPI in the championship bout at 157 lbs. Winters is now 18-4 in 2017-18 with 10 of those wins coming by pin.

Co-Rookie of the Week: Alec Corrao (Fr.) | 165 LB | Ithaca

Corrao posted his most impressive performance to-date in helping No. 5 Ithaca take second place at the New Standard Spartan Invitational hosted by York College (Pa.) this past Saturday. Corrao went 4-2 on the day en route to a fourth-place finish at 165-pounds. He scored two victories by decision, a 9-6 opening round win over Nick Anselmi of Williams and a 3-2 triumph over Jackson Drum of York (Pa.). He added a 15-5 major decision over Josh Smith of Stevens, before punching his ticket to the third-place bout with an 11-3 major decision over Benjamin Hooff of Baldwin Wallace. The victories improved Corrao’s record to 8-6 on the season.
 



Week #3: November 13 - November 19, 2017

Co-Wrestler of the Week: Jonathan Haas (Sr.) | 125 LB | Brockport
 
Haas moved to 14-0 on the season with his victory in the 125-lb weight class of the New York State Championships. His closest bout came in the round of 16 when he defeated Binghamton’s Audey Ashkar by a 5-2 decision as part of two victories over Division I opponents on the day. His championship bout was against Colton Cummings of United States Military Academy, who Haas pinned in 3:45 to earn the title.
 
Co-Wrestler of the Week: Jake O'Brien (Jr.) | 285 LB | Ithaca
 
Ranked fifth in the country at the Division III level, O'Brien bested three NCAA Division I grapplers and one of the top wrestlers at the junior college level to take home the title in the heavyweight division at the 2017 New York State Collegiate Championships. He opened the day with a tie-breaker victory over Omar Haddad of Hofstra, scoring a 4-3 win in the first tiebreak round. He followed that with a hard-fought 3-2 decision over Ben Sullivan of the United States Military Prep Academy. He punched his ticket to the weight-class final with another victory that required extra time. He defeated McZiggy Richards of host Cornell 3-2 in the second tiebreak round by a 3-2 margin. O'Brien's most dominant effort of the day came in the final, as he ran away with a 7-0 decision against Seth Janney of the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club.
 
Rookie of the Week: Kaidon Winters (Fr.) | 157 LB | RIT
 
Winters placed sixth at 157 lbs., at the NYS Championships, going 5-2 on the day with two falls. He defeated Howie Nolan from Jamestown Community College with a fall at six minutes. Winters was defeated by San Schneider of Ithaca with a fall at 37 seconds in the championship round. He then won four consecutive matches in the wrestle back portion. He is now 15-3 on the season.
 

Week #2: November 6 - November 12, 2017

Wrestler of the Week: James Bethel (Sr.) | 285 LB | SUNY Oneonta
 
In his opening competition of the 2017-18 season, Bethel manhandled his opponents en route to a 3-0 record at the Electric City Duals this past Saturday.  All of his wins came via pin as he earned the Most Outstanding Wrestler award helping Oneonta win the team title. Bethel’s first pin came against Wyatt Morris of RIT in 6:58.  His next two pins came in 45 and 24 seconds respectively in matches versus Alex Lagrippo of Lackawanna College and William Oxley of Scranton.
 
Rookie of the Week: Kaidon Winters (Fr.) | 157 LB | RIT
 
Winters won all four of his matches at 157 lbs., including three by pin to lead the Tigers at the Electric City Duals hosted by Scranton on Saturday. Winters recordedchis first pin of the day in 16 seconds against Lackawanna and earned a pin over Bailey Funk of Temple in 1:57. Winters pinned Daniel Winters of Oneonta in 2:42 and earned an 8-0 win over John Sheedy of Oneonta. He is now 10-2 on the season.
 

Week #1: October 30 - November 5, 2017

Co-Wrestler of the Week: Jordan Bushey (So.) | 184 LB | Oswego State
 
All-American Jordan Bushey picked up where he left off in 2016-17, claiming first place among all 184-pounders at the Ithaca College Invitational. The sophomore went 5-0 to start his season, accounting for 20 of the Lakers' 69.0 team points. Three of his wins came by decision, including a 4-1 semifinal victory and a 5-3 triumph in the championship bout over No. 10 ranked Jake Ashcraft. Bushey also had two falls over Friday and Saturday, winning his first match by pin at 1:43 and the quarterfinal at 3:23.
 
Co-Wrestler of the Week: Triston Engle (Jr.) | 197 LB | Brockport
 
Triston Engle, who is the returning fourth place finisher from the 197-lb weight class at last year’s national tournament, was dominant in his first tournament of 2017, taking first place at the Brockport Open. He ended the day 5-0, pinning his first four opponents in 1:03, 0:36, 1:12, and 0:27 before winning the championship bout by tech fall, 17-0.
 
Rookie of the Week: Zach Stedeford (Fr.) | 149 LB | RIT
 
Stedeford advanced to the finals at 149 lbs., winning four matches. After a first-round bye, he defeated Marvin Cunningham of Johnson & Wales with a fall at 1:06. Stedeford defeated Benjamin Forsman of Norwich 13-3 in a second round match and advanced to the semifinals after opponent Dylan Van Sickell of Springfield College was disqualified in the quarterfinals. Stedeford continued his winning ways by defeating Demetri D'Orsaneo of Ithaca in the semifinals by a score of 4-1. Stedeford has his excellent run halted by Baltazar Gonzalez of American International College in the championship.
