ITHACA 1, Trenton State 1
ITHACA 4-2, strokes
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa.—Ithaca claimed the program’s first national championship by topping Trenton State (now The College of New Jersey) 4-2 in strokes after the two teams had played to a 1-1 tie through regulation.
The Bombers got on the scoreboard first on an unassisted goal by Sophomore Tracey Moyer midway through the first half. The Lions tied the game on a penalty stroke with 16:55 remaining in regulation.
Shooting first in the penalty stroke session, Ithaca took a 2-1 lead. Senior Diane Rapp converted her attempt, followed by a successful stroke by senior all-American Cathy Foto. The Lions made their first try and were stopped on their second. Both teams traded successful strokes on their third attempt (with senior all-American Mary Klecha connecting for Ithaca). When sophomore Barb Wachowiak was successful on her attempt, Trenton State was left needing a successful stroke to stave off elimination; they were unsuccessful and Ithaca emerged with the school’s first NCAA title in a women’s sport. Freshman goalie Karen Howarth made five saves; Ithaca outshot Trenton State 46-6.
Ithaca had advanced to the national championship game by routing Cortland 5-1 in the opening round of the NCAA playoffs behind three goals by Foto and Klecha’s two assists. In the national semifinals, Foto and Moyer scored second-half goals and Howarth stopped two shots for the shutout as the Bombers blanked Franklin & Marshall 2-0.
Foto, Moyer, Rapp and junior Clare Lamont were all named to the all-tournament team.
