WORCESTER, Mass. – The Remley Cup brought a strong field to Worcester, Massachusetts, as No. 9 Ithaca College lined up against other nationally ranked programs including No. 1 Trinity College, No. 5 Colby College, No. 6 Marietta College, and No. 10 Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Saturday. Racing took place under overcast skies with a light crosswind, providing competitive conditions throughout the day.
The varsity eight was a little shaky off the line after being hit by a gust of wind in the starting area but responded well. Resetting quickly, the Bombers established an aggressive base rhythm and settled into the race. Trinity led early, followed by Colby, with Ithaca locked in a tight pack alongside Marietta and WPI.
By the third 500 meters, Ithaca trailed Colby by half a length while holding even with Marietta and maintaining an advantage over WPI. As Marietta made a move to challenge Colby, the Bombers responded, staying within striking distance. In the closing sprint, Ithaca pushed to close the gap but came up just short of overtaking Colby, while maintaining overlap with Marietta and extending their lead over WPI.
The second varsity eight got off the line cleanly but struggled to match the early speed of the field. Despite working to regain rhythm and momentum mid-race, the early deficit proved difficult to overcome, resulting in a fifth-place finish.
In the final race of the day, the third varsity four delivered a standout performance. The crew executed an aggressive start, quickly moving ahead of both WPI entries. Under pressure from WPI's top boat, the Bombers maintained composure and continued to build their margin, ultimately securing an open-water victory.
Head Coach
Justin Stangel noted the team's continued growth after an impressive overall performance on Saturday.
"We're seeing strong week-to-week progress, particularly in our ability to adapt during races while staying composed and committed to our race plan," said Stangel. That will be critical as we prepare for championship racing."
Ithaca now turns its focus to the Liberty League Championships on May 1, where the Bombers will look to defend their conference title.
