CHERRY HILL, N.J. – The Ithaca College men's rowing team was in action on Saturday competing in the first day of the Knecht Cup. Warm temperatures paired with breezy conditions led to some delays, but the Ithaca Bombers crews handled the challenges well on the opening day of racing at the Knecht Cup.
The day began with the third varsity four competing in the Division III event. The Bombers came off the line cleanly and settled into third position early. Establishing a strong base rhythm through the middle of the race, Ithaca made a decisive move in the third 500 meters to claim second while maintaining contact with the leaders. The crew held that position through the finish and will compete in Sunday's A final with a chance to reach the podium.
Ithaca's second varsity eight followed in the Division III varsity event and delivered an impressive performance. In a tightly contested opening, the Bombers set the early pace and responded to sustained pressure from the field. Over the final 1,000 meters, Ithaca steadily extended its lead, ultimately securing a decisive victory. The 2V8 advances to the A final and will race for a medal on Sunday.
The first varsity eight closed out the day in the open event against Division I and club competition. After a challenging start, the Bombers regrouped and found their rhythm in the middle portion of the race, moving from fourth into third position entering the final 500 meters. Despite a strong push to hold their position, Ithaca was edged late and will compete in the B final.
Head coach
Justin Stangel remained optimistic following the day's racing.
"We saw a lot of really positive pieces across all three boats today," Stangel said. "The 3V4 did a great job staying composed and making a move when it mattered, and the 2V8 showed a lot of maturity controlling that race under pressure. With the 1V8, it wasn't our cleanest start, but I was encouraged by how they reset and fought their way back into contention mid-race. That's something we can build on."
Looking ahead to finals, Stangel emphasized continued growth and attention to detail.
"We know there are a few areas we can sharpen up—particularly around our starts and executing our race plans earlier. The focus tonight is on recovery and making small adjustments that can have a big impact. The group is in a good place mentally, and we're excited for the opportunity to compete again tomorrow."
Racing resumes late Sunday morning for the Bombers:
Third Varsity Four – A Final (11:19 a.m.)
Second Varsity Eight – A Final (1:56 p.m.)
First Varsity Eight – B Final (2:34 p.m.)
