ELMIRA, N.Y. – Competing in their first-ever NCAA Region I Championships, the Ithaca College women's wrestling team had four athletes in action on Saturday, with each eventually bowing out of their respective weight classes.
Ithaca is one of 34 institutions competing at the LECOM Event Center in downtown Elmira. Following the first day of action, the top five teams in the standings are Sacred Heart (149.5), Western New England (137.5), Felician (98), Elmira College (95), and D'Youville (74).
At 117 pounds, first-year
Angie Berry opened her tournament with a loss by fall to Western New England's Maddie Ripley. She was unable to score in her next bout, dropping a 5-0 decision to Centenary University's Elizabeth Galladay.
Competing at 124,
Sophia Torian was pinned by Gianna Silva in 1:40 but rebounded with a strong win over Utica's Octavia Dragotta, earning a pin at 1:23. Torian's run came to an end in her next consolation match, a 12-2 tech fall loss to Felician's Liliana Zaku‑Ramos.
Sammi Meyer went 2-2 on the day at 131. She opened her regional performance with a 15-4 technical fall over New England College's Orla King before being pinned by Felician's Christina Borgmann. Meyer responded with a hard-fought 8-6 decision over Wilkes University's Abbi Bowman, but her tournament ended with an 8-0 loss to Sacred Heart's Bella Sowards in the consolation bracket.
At 145, first year
Melina Georgas finished 1-2. She led 6-4 in her opening bout against Mary Smith (Maine Maritime) before Smith secured the fall at 1:28. Georgas bounced back with a dominant performance against Valerie Iglesias, building a 4-0 lead before earning the fall. She concluded her day with a 12-2 tech fall loss to Sanyah Queen.
Competition resumes at 11 a.m. on Sunday morning in Elmira with spots for the National Championships on the line.
