ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 21 nationally ranked Ithaca College softball team opened the 2025 NCAA Division III Softball Championship on Thursday afternoon with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Springfield College at Kostrinsky Field.
After a scoreless first inning, the Bombers struck first in the bottom of the second.
Haley Petrucci singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch before
Anna Bello delivered a clutch double to right-center, driving in the game's first run.
In the top of the third,
Anna Cornell kept the momentum going by striking out the side, bringing her total to six strikeouts through three innings. Both teams were quiet offensively through the middle innings, as dominant pitching kept scoring opportunities limited.
Springfield managed to tie the game in the top of the sixth, capitalizing on an error and a hit-by-pitch with two outs. However, Ithaca limited the damage thanks to a heads-up defensive play by
Jessie Lopez, who threw out the potential go-ahead runner at home to preserve the 1–1 tie.
The Bombers responded immediately in the bottom of the sixth.
Sela Scheinman led off with a double off the wall, and after a sacrifice bunt by
Cate Murray moved her to third,
Kailen Winkelblech came through in the clutch. With two outs, Winkelblech singled to right-center to bring home the go-ahead run.
Cornell returned to the circle in the seventh and shut the door with a clean inning to secure the 2–1 win. She finished the game with a dominant line: seven innings pitched, four hits allowed, one earned run, and 11 strikeouts.
Anna Bello and
Kailen Winkelblech each recorded an RBI for Ithaca.
The Bombers will be back in action tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. when they take on No. 9 nationally ranked Texas Lutheran in the winner's bracket, once again at Kostrinsky Field. The Bulldogs opened up the Ithaca NCAA Regional taking down UMass Boston, 2-1 in the morning matchup. Friday's winner will advance to the regional championship game on Saturday, while the loser will play either Springfield/UMass Boston in an elimination game at 4 p.m. on Friday.
