Gummow Shines with First Place Finish as Men's Wrestling Secures Sixth at SUNYAC Championship

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Ithaca College men's wrestling team finished sixth at the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Championship that was hosted by the Cortland Red Dragons at nearby Lusk Field House. The Bombers collected a total of 104 team points as the Red Dragons tied for first with Oneonta for the team title with 141 points each. Brockport placed third with, followed by Oswego (120), RIT (107.5), Ithaca (104), St. John Fisher (63.5) and Utica (24). The team scores were determined by each school's highest scorer within each weight class.
 
Highlighting the Bombers performances was first year Tomah Gummow who was seeded second to begin the championship and ended up placing first at 125 lbs. In his first bout, Gummow pinned Cortland's Wyatt Gentzel in 2:53 and would score a 14-3 major decision and a 10-9 decision over Brockport's Liam Bullock to punch his ticket to the first-place match. He continued to shine and dominated Jacob Deysher (RIT) along the way to a 13-2 major decision.
 
Xavier Pommells won his first three bouts to reach the 184 lbs. first-place match, which he dropped 5-1 by decision to Oneonta's Jack Ryan. He beat Jackson Campbell (Cortland), James Sturek (Oswego) and Robert Cunningham by pinning each to claim second place.
 
Up next, the Bombers will travel to Ewing, N.J. on Friday, January 24 for a dual against No. TCNJ. Wrestling is slated to begin at 7 p.m.
