Ithaca Sculling Hosts the Cayuga Sprints to Begin its Season

9/23/2024 10:00:00 AM

ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College sculling team opened the 2024 season on Sunday with the IC sculling team hosted the 11th Running of the Cayuga Small-Boat Sprints.

Opponents from RIT, University of Rochester, Cornell Rowing Club, and Cascadilla Boat Club met the Bombers for the combination-format event. Each crew raced a 2k time trial, followed by a 1k sprint. Winning times were calculated by doubling each crew's sprint time & adding it to the 2k time.

The Bombers topped the field in three of the six events contested. The 2x of Ashley Bailey and Maggie Farber clocked a 15:52.0 to finish third overall, more than a minute ahead of the next crew in their class. Close behind, with the fourth overall time of 16:34.4, came IC's 4x+ of Haley Beckford, Anna Capodilupo, Beth Roberts, Emmi Chen, & Zoe Paradis Stern. Like their teammates, the quad won their boat class decisively, with a 39 second lead over the next 4x. The final medal for the Bombers came from the 5th-place-overall finish from the 2- of Samantha Gallagher and Emma Hammel. The pair only held a two second lead over RIT's A entry after the time trial but executed powerfully in the 1k sprint to finish in 16:35.0 and open their lead to nine seconds in the end.

No team walked away empty handed, however. Cascadilla rower (and IC General Counsel) Emily Rockett repeated her win in the 1x with a sixth overall finish of 16:48.0 over IC's Lily Babcock, who topped the collegiate entries in 17:22.8.  RIT came out on top in the lw2x event, with an eighth-place overall finish of 16:49.2 over the Bomber entry of Payton Fisch and Hope Oliveira.  University of Rochester's turn came in the lw1x, where their entry pulled 18:28.5 to edge out IC's Julia DiCostanzo by 12 seconds. In the only men's event of the day, the Cornell Rowing Club 2x prevailed over Cascadilla and recorded the fastest time of the day, 15:39.1.

Full results can be found here. The Bombers return to action on Sunday, September 29 when they compete in the Green Mountain Head Regatta at 9 a.m. in Putney, Vermont.
