No. 23 Field Hockey Overcomes Early Deficit to Down St. John Fisher, 3-1

ITHACA, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 23 Ithaca College field hockey program improved to 2-0 on the season with a 3-1 non-conference victory over St. John Fisher University at Higgins Stadium on September 1. For the second straight contest, IC received every goal from a different scorer.

IC earned corner just 38 into the game but was unable to take a shot. A minute later, Ainsley Grant ripped the first shot of the game, which was saved.

Fisher took a 1-0 lead just over a minute later on a deflected pass that snuck past Abby Cannon.

The Bombers recorded eight shots over the first 15 minutes, with five on goal, but all were saved by Fisher's goalkeeper Senja Matson. IC also earned five corners in the period.

Similar to the first quarter, the Bombers picked up a corner attempt 31 seconds in, but the ensuing shot sailed wide of target.

IC then knotted the game at 1-1 with 10:15 remaining as Juliana Valli collected a saved shot from Meara Bury and found the back of the net for her first goal of the season.

The Bombers came out fast in the second half as Abby Hennessy gave IC a 2-1 lead off a corner with 13:16 left in the third quarter. Bury inserted off the corner to Payton Yahner, who found Hennessy on the left wing for an open shot.

IC put home another goal with just 33 seconds left in the period as Mia Woodard tallied her first collegiate goal off a pass from Toni Ierardi to make it 3-1.

The Bombers dominated possession in the third quarter with 17 shots to just one for Fisher. IC also earned eight corners over the 15-minute stretch, but Matson limited the damage for Fisher with 10 saves in the quarter.

The final quarter of play was a battle for possession most of the time and only two total shots were recorded.

IC finished the contest with a 30-6 advantage in shots and a 15-5 differential in penalty corners.

Abby Canton picked up her first win of the season with two saves.

The Bombers are back home on Wednesday evening, September 4 with a 7 p.m. matchup against Misericordia.
