CANTON, N.Y. — The nationally ranked No. 20 Ithaca College women's lacrosse team improved to 9-1 on the season and 5-0 in the Liberty League after defeating St. Lawrence University Saints by the score of 12-7 on April 6 in the North Country.
The Bombers were led offensively by
Sydney Phillips with five goals and two assists, and
Leigh Naturale with three.
Maizy Veitch had two goals and one assist while
Elizabeth Green had a lone goal.
Lily Cody led the team in assists with two on the day, and
Lexi Kellish had one.
Liney Dutchyshyn caused four turnovers on the night, and
Lexi Held stopped 14 shots, good for a .667 save percentage.
The Bombers got on the board at the 10:03 mark after
Sydney Phillips was able to score off an assist by
Chloe Nordyke. The Saints would respond with three goals in-a-row within less than three minutes of eachother. A goal from
Maizy Veitch brought the Bombers within one, where
Leigh Naturale tied the game up off a free position shot. The first quarter ended in a tie at three.
The Saints took the lead early in the second quarter, but it was a Bomber takeover from the 12-minute mark on till half. Three man-up situations and two free position shots later,
Lexi Kellish,
Sydney Phillips and
Elizabeth Green were all able to put the ball in the back of the net. With two minutes left in the half,
Leigh Naturale tallied in her second goal of the half, off an assist from
Lily Cody. A tough defensive stop from the Bombers ended the half 7-4 in favor of Ithaca.
The third quarter was much like the second half, with a surge of offense from the Bombers. They were able to open the quarter with five back-to-back goals within the first 10 minutes. Kelsey Roth was able to tally in a goal for the Saints on a man-up opportunity, but the score stood 12-5 Bombers.
The final quarter was rather quiet offensively compared to the other three, there were two lone goals from the Saints, but neither were enough to make it a tighter game. The final buzzer rang with a score of 12-7 in favor of Ithaca.
The Bombers were outshot by St. Lawrence, 31-29, and the two teams were dead even at shots on goal with 20 apiece. Ithaca held a sizable advantage in saves, 14-8, but the Saints led in ground balls, 23-16.
The Bombers face off against No. 2 William Smith on April 10 at 1 p.m. at Higgins Stadium.
