Men’s Rowing Capture Gold in the 1V and 2V8 at the NYS Championships

4/22/2024 11:23:00 AM

SARATONGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - At this weekend's New York State Collegiate Championships, the Ithaca College men's rowing program had an outstanding Saturday as they won both the first and second varsity 8s, while placing second in the novice 8 and finishing fifth in the varsity four.

On Saturday the Bombers first varsity 8 lineup consisted of Miles Kenaston, Riley Maynard, Rhys Pellaton, James Ross, Bryce Williston, Wesley Hoglin, Griffin Hunt, Max Detzer and Marshall Adams. The lineup for the IC 2V8 was Caroline Grass, Caleb Grassi, Ethan Revis, Brodie Hart, Tynan Fields, Jonah Alefantis, Nico Greenberg, Nolyn Boswell and Maxwell Vallino.

The Bombers 1V8 began its morning racing a clean race in the first heat as they paced Army, RIT, Skidmore and Stony Brook finishing first with a time of 6:32.001 with the boat from Army finishing second (6:36.34).

Ithaca's entry in the 2V8 raced before the strong afternoon headwinds and earned gold over six other entries and won with a recorded time of 6:59.098. Finishing in medalist places were RIT (7:05.762) and Army (7:17.794).

Ithaca's entry in the varsity four (Sami Smith, Cameron Strong, James Pittard, Cameron Stanford and Adam Zwolinski) crossed the line first in their morning heat with a time of 7:33.085. They raced out of lane three in the final and scored a fifth-place finish and time of 7:45.451 compared to Army's 7:20.043 who won gold in the race.

With rough winds predicted, the regatta organizers pushed afternoon racing 1 hour earlier, leaving less time for the varsity eight to refuel and recover between heats and finals. By afternoon, those winds had arrived in the form of direct headwind, and races were taking 60 to 90 seconds longer than they would be expected to take in flat conditions.

In the varsity 8 final, Ithaca lined up against Hamilton and Army in opposite lanes, as it proved to be a three-boat race with the Bombers crew edging out Hamilton with a time of 6:58.061 as the crew from Hamilton finished just under three seconds behind the Bombers.

Ithaca College will return to action on Friday, May 3 for the Liberty League Championships that will take place on the same course in Saratoga Springs.
