ITHACA, N.Y. – The Ithaca College women's swimming & diving program is co-hosting the 13
th Annual Bomber Invitational this weekend and action began on Friday evening inside the Kelsey Partridge Bird Natatorium. This year the invitational has been reformatted as swimmers competed in just the 800-yard freestyle relay and the 1,650 freestyle while divers competed in a 3-meter diving relay on Friday. The Bombers generated the most team points at 253 and lead Hamilton College (205), the University of Rochester (189), Nazareth University (164), Middlebury College (121), Vassar College (111), Union College (82), Smith College (78) and Alfred University (35) after the first day of action.
The Bombers "A" relay consisted of
Angela Merch,
Ava Palfreyman,
Naomi Fry and
Samantha Bender and they each were solid within their respective legs of the 800 freestyle relay and put together a combined time of 7:45.20, which was good for a second-place finish behind Middlebury's 7:39.39. Ithaca scored an additional 46 team points with the "B" relay teams seventh-place finish.

Kerry O'Brien and
Kathleen Papiernik combined for a time of 7:56.86.
In the longest event of the Bomber Invite,
Caroline Armistead put together a second-place finish in the 1,650 freestyle with a time of 18:14.39. Middlebury's Chole Katz won the event at 17:14.10. Also finishing within the top-10 for Ithaca were
Ava Palfreyman in eighth (18:38.46),
Emma Heinze in ninth (18:40.29) and
Kerry O'Brien was in tenth with a recorded time of 18:46.24.
The Bombers were able to win the 3-meter diving relay with a finals score of 292.50, which edged out the University of Rochester who scored a 260.50 and Nazareth University rounded out the top-3 with a score of 216.55.
The invitational will resume at 9 a.m. with prelims in the 200-yard butterfly, 200-yard freestyle, 100-yard breaststroke, 100-yard backstroke, 400-yard IM and 50-yard freestyle with the finals then taking place later in the evening at 6 p.m. Diving will take place at 12:30 p.m. with the women competing on the 3-meter boards with the finals also taking place at 6 p.m. along with the 200-yard freestyle relay.
