YORK, Pa. – The Ithaca College men's wrestling team sits in seventh place out of 15 teams after the first day of competition at the 15th Annual New Standard Invitational hosted by York College. Nine out of the 22 Bombers wrestlers remain in contention within the championship bracket as they advance to the quarterfinals after day one.
Five other IC wrestlers will also advance to the second day of competition within the consolations:
Will Bentrim,
Matt Haycook,
Eamon Callaghan,
Cosmo Damiani, and
Brandon Ribeiro.
Advancing to the quarterfinals in their respective weight classes are:
Turner is off to a 1-0 start, picking up a 4-2 decision over Alfred State's Aaron Johnson. He will face JWU's Adolfo Betancur in his quarterfinal matchup.
Isaias Torres scored an impressive 20-4 technical fall over York's Jacob Grzybek and is off to a 2-0 start. Also 2-0,
Jackson Gray defeated TCNJ's Jimmy Dolan by an 11-4 decision and then pinned Owen Turnbow in 2:02 to advance to the quarterfinals.
Jake Jones, returning to 184 lbs., picked up a pair of falls over Ursinus's Jake Gross (1:29) and Washington & Lee's Jack McCusker. He will face a tough opponent in Joel Martinovsky in his quarterfinal bout tomorrow.
Wenchard Pierre-Louis, competing for the first time this season all togehter at 149 lbs., scored two impressive wins: a 14-2 major decision over TCNJ's Gavin Rucci and a 17-2 tech fall over Wes Tosto.
Xavier Pommells and
Konrad Parker, both on the top half of their respective brackets, are moving onto the quarterfinals. Pommells dominated TCNJ's James Romaine, earning a fall in 4:54 in his lone bout. Parker earned two pins, first against U.S. Merchant Marine's Matthew Gauthler in 53 seconds and then over Apprentice School's Landon Kissel in 4:36.
First-year
Max Casiano scored across the mat to earn a 17-1 tech fall over Delaware Valley's Matt Mushinsky and pinned Jason McKee in 3:52. Fellow newcomer
Tomah Gummow won his only bout via a tech fall, besting Gabe Tulone 19-3.
Wrestling will resume on Saturday at 10 a.m. with U.S. Merchant Marine leading the team standings at 50.5 points. The top five teams are separated by only 3.5 points, with Washington & Lee in second place at 49 points, No. 4 Johnson & Wales at 48.5, No. 19 TCNJ at 47.5, and Roanoke in fifth with 47 points.
