Putney, Vt. - Nineteen Scullers from the Ithaca College sculling team sharpened their knives in Herrick's Cove, Vermont this past weekend at the Green Mountain Head Regatta. In addition to showcasing VT cheddar & the fall colors, this regatta is a classic for allowing athletes to take in the breadth of the rowing community - from juniors to elites to masters in their 50s & 70s (that our young Bombers may never suspect to be the FISA World Record holders and Olympians that they are).
With single & double event entries in the 19-34 age categories dominated by the elite training centers of ARION and the Green Racing Project, the Bombers raced with eyes on internal execution rather than hitting the medals stand.
In the 1x, graduate student
Emma Hammel and senior
Samantha Gallagher fought for bragging rights as the top collegiate finisher, covering the 5k course within 4 seconds of each other at 23:51.1 and 23:55.0 respectively. First year
Beth Roberts foreshadowed continued speed for the squad by following only 35 seconds behind.
In the 2x, IC claimed the top collegiate finish with
Julia DiCostanzo and
Zoe Paradis Stern rowing to 7th place in 22:26.3. The senior duo of
Lily Babcock and
Ashley Bailey aimed to top their teammates, but tangled with another crew during a pass and ultimately finished 10 seconds behind in 8th.
Maggie Farber and
Anna Capodilupo rounded out the top-3 Bomber finishes only :30 back.
Outside our own shells, the Bombers were delighted to see the regatta peppered with IC Alumnae throwing down impressive times! Savannah Brija '19 (ARION) won the 19-34 1x in 21:03.8. Karina Feitner '18 (ARION) and Chloe Lewis '16 (Riverside) placed 6th and 15th in the same event. Jenn Devlin '95 (QRA) raced to 3rd in the 45-54 age category. The Bombers return to action on Saturday, October 12 when they comepete in the Head of the Genesee in Rochester, N.Y.
