POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The nationally ranked No. 17 Ithaca College women's lacrosse team was in a back-and-forth battle all afternoon at Vassar College on Saturday and came out on the wrong end of a 13-12 decision as the Brewers scored the game-winning goal with just 31 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Ithaca is now 8-4 on the season and 5-2 in the Liberty League.
IC scored the opening goal of the contest as
Sydney Phillips took a pass from
Hayley Armstrong to give the Bombers a 1-0 lead just 1:15 after the initial draw. Vassar would score the next two goals to establish a 2-1 advantage by the 12:43 mark, but the Bombers answered with two straight goals from
Maddie Hall and
Chloe Nordyke to go back in front, 3-2, with just over nine minutes remaining.
The Brewers would tally the next four goals to create a 6-3 difference after the opening 15 minutes of action.
By the 7:49 mark of the second quarter, Ithaca knotted the matchup at 6-6 as Hall scored once and
Maizy Veitch tallied two goals. From there, IC and Vassar traded goals and the Bombers took a 9-8 edge into halftime. Phillips, Hall and
Caroline Wise all scored during the final three goals of the half.
Only three goals were scored in the third quarter as Veitch and Phillips accounted for the Bomber tallies and IC maintained its lead, 11-9, heading to the final 15 minutes of play.
Vassar wasted no time tying the game at 11-11 as two goals were scored within the opening 1:24 of the fourth period. Veitch would put IC back on top, 12-11, at the 8:55 mark, but Vassar closed out the quarter and game with goals at 5:20 and :31 to come away with the win.
Ithaca will head to No. 3 William Smith next Wednesday, April 12 at 4 p.m.
